Message: Looking into swaping my 2000 3.9 to a 5.9, is this possible? I have a 5 speed 4x4 RC, would i have to replace everything (including tranny)? Would it hold its place next to a R/T?

Message: anything is possible. people have put viper v10s in daks but I wanna know too!!
is it cost effective???
i would do it if it were like $3000 cause id rather have a 5.9 then a supercharger
but ive heard it ends up costing like 6000 or so
has anyone done this???

Message: some guys have talked about doing this. is it cost effective? well, depends. if you plan on turning your truck into a project truck, then yes. because the cost of a new truck is more than swapping out all the parts. now, if this is just going to be replaced after a couple of years, then no, wait until you get the next one. depending on the model tranny you have, you'll have to change that (unless you got the NV3500 5-speed, which i think can handle a stock 5.9), you'll have to get a new PCM, new Engine (probably the most expensive part), maybe a new wiring harness, new electronic controls, new ignition system, and countless other items that change from one engine to another, and then you can start pumping it up.
Just adding some perspective.

Message: You need the engine, in some cases a transmision or at least a flywheel for a 360, wiring harness, new front suspension to accomidate the weight, sometimes a new rear end and drive shaft, and several little items that will eat you alive. If you want your truck to turn 12's and you have thousands of dollars to drop all at one time, then by all means go for it. Plan on your truck being down for awhile. You will also have to take it to the highway patrol when it's done to get inspected and a new VIN number. Your insurance will definately go up. I have seen trucks like Bernds turn 12's and 13's and be daily drivers. Plus you can build up your V6 a little at a time whereas a V8 swap is alot of money all at once. If you don't budget properly before you jerk the V6 out, you could have a truck with a V8 that doesn't run until you can afford all those little things. I have considered a swap, still haven't completely ruled it out, but it is highly unlikely I will. Will probably just build up my V6 a little. I'm not looking for 12's yet ; )

Message: CBSDAKOTA, where do you live? I know of LOTS of people in Indiana who have trucks and cars alike with anything but stock motors and none have reported it to the state police or their insurance. I was under the idea that you reported to your insurance once and after that any mods were fair game. If the State Police or the insurance had to know of engine swaps it wouldn't be long before your insurance could go up for FIPK or any other mod. Not preaching just sharing my opinion.

Message: Hey guys - I just picked my truck up from my mechanic's, where it was getting the FMS injectors put on. He is just starting an engine swap, a 5.2 into a 3.9.
There is a thread on moparchat, he said he will update as the work progresses, when I was there the new engine was on the floor. From what I understand, it should be a fairly nice swap, wiring harnesses and pcm being the major differences.

Message: Never reported anything. If you have a wreck, the vehicle is inspected by the insurance company. Any discrepancies and they can refuse to pay and drop you like that. By law, if you swap the entire engine, you have to report it, get it inspected and get a new VIN number. Mods are another thing. Have a wreck with mods and the insurance company just won't replace the mods, only the stock parts, unless you claim them with receipts and whatnot. I have heard of people sliding off the road, just a little damage and the insurance wouldn't pay because they didn't have stock size tires on it. What you do is your business. Insurance is based on engine, not mods or dyno sheets.

Message: one thing to look out for is that the 3.9 is internally balanced and the 5.9 is externally balanced. i have heard that if you have the auto you need to replace the 42 with a 46...but you might be able to just get the torqure converter for a 5.9 since it has the balance weights on it..

Message: you may have trouble with the computer! the 98 and later dakotas had a digital odometer and the 97 had the old school kind. you may have to find a computer for a 97 dakota with a 5.9, but of course they didn't make a rt in 97 so try to find an aftermarket one at the dodge dealership. they should be able to order you a performance computer for a 97 5.9. oh, use that rt's tranny if you weren't going to. they shift a whole lot better!!
good luck

Message: that isn't a very streetable engine.... you may not want that as a daily driver and it won't work with any kinda stock pcm. carb is going to be the best route. i don't know if that trans can handle it but that is a lot of torque from that engine going to it.

Message: Guys, I'm gonna tell you a wild story. I bought a wrecked 99 R/T dakota....i had a 97 v6 dakota. It took me and my uncle 4 weeks to complete the swap. Had to swap the whole rearend...trans...engine.... but then came the fun part. we had to swap the internal wiring harness in the dash also....and the wierd part is..the 360 had 22000 miles on it...and my v6 had 73000 miles, and my odo still shows the 73000 miles...i think the mileage is stored in the brain in the guage piece..because it is NOT stored in the PCM..or it would have showed up, being you must swap brains also. this was NOT a fun job..lol. But i will tell you, my truck now SCREAMS. underdrive pulleys...transgo shiftkit.... roller rockers...and mopar performance cam. this truck is pretty nice..ive only had it done since yesterday..and the road was wet, so i didnt get to play too much...but i will very soon. If any of you guys are planning on swapping a 360 into a v6 2nd gen dakota (97-up)....it seems youre basically gonna have to have a whole R/T truck...because of all the little things youre gonna need. (pieces like where the cig lighter is in the R/T had 2 plugs and an airbag switch.) also had to change the light switch..and get a new black trim piece for the dash from an R/T because of the differences in the 97 v6/99 rt light switches. but if any of you are seriously considering this, and you want to ask any questions, email me at jameslr@bellsouth.net and ill be glad to help you anyway i can. happy tire smoking. :)

Message: The 360 is externally balanced engine and the 318 and the 3.9 is internally balanced. There has never been a manual trans 360 from the factory unless you want to spend a bunch of money and have a 360 internally balanced. Plus the Crank doesnt have a whole for the pilot bearing like the 5.2 and 3.9 does so you are kinda screwed there id stick with a AUTO and just do some mods to the Trans itself I.E Shift Kit. Im waiting on my ole little 3.9 to give up so i can put in my ole 340 thats been sitting in my garage since the mid 90's it came out of my 69 Dart GTS when an unfortunate AS#HOLE T-Boned it and Thats all i have left of her 10.5 to Flat Tops with 509 Purple Shaft Cam and I also have a Set Of Magnum Heads on Her and Also a 318 Barrel stlye Intake that the LOCAL dealer replaced since the Belly Pan Gasket was blown on a Ram that Came in and they threw it out in the Back like they always do here and just picked them up and tossed them in My Dakota and Drove on home . Same place i got the heads only thing wrong with them was the were slightly warped had them Surfaced and leaked checked and no problems. Now THATS A ENGINE SWAP
