Message: In a warmed up tranny and under normal acceleration, what speed should the torque converter lock up? Mine locks up at approx. 45mph.
The reason being is that I noticed while accelerating normally onto the freeway, the tranny seems to shift into 4th(or OD) only for a split second and then the torque converter locks up and robs my acceleration. I have to step on the gas and then it downshifts to 3rd which is OK. Then when I start to level out my acceleration, it does the quick 4th and the into torque converter mode. Is there something wrong with it? Is it supposed to hold 4th a little longer? It's an 02 Club Cab 4x4 3.9 with only a few thousand miles.
Thanks.

Message: Believe it or not this is normal. This is my second Dodge, currently a 2000 Dakota Sport 3.9 L and my other one was a 2000 2500 Ram with a 360 ci and they both do the same. It is Dodges new set up to lock the vehicle in 4th gear at 45 mph or so. I was told this by a mechanic at a Dodge dealership in Auburn,Maine.
This was to cure the Tranny problems known for by Dodge owners. It does work well. They wanted to prevent the constant shifting in and out of 4th gear at that speed. The only way around it from doing that is to lock off O.D.
There goes the already bad fuel mileageif you do that!! Hope this answered your question.
It isn't a transmission problem...

Message: Thanks for the reply Jeff. I feel better knowing that it is supposed to work that way. It's my first auto in a while and first Dodge auto.
