Subject: v6 quad cab IP: Logged
Message: How does the 3.9 perform in the quad cab as far as
acceleration, passing power, and mileage is
concerned? Obviously I don't expect the 3.9l quad
cab to perform like a V8. I have a 99 3.9 V6 club
cab. Performance is sufficient as well as gas
mileage. I am particularly interested in the auto
transmission. Any input would be greatly
appreciated!!

Message: I have a 2000 V6 Quad Cab and I love it. I have betten a few reg. cab and extended cab V6's at the track. I will agree that from the start it needs some help. Hopefully a set of 3.91 gears will help that. So far with the airaide intake, 48mm throttle body, JBA headers, and 3" Dynomax cat back it's quick. My gas milage on the highway(before the throttle body) was 16.5mpg and 14-15 mpg in the city. Since then the city milage has droped to about 13mpg but then again I am not light of foot.
From past post I see that a lot of guys are running similar times at the track with the same performance parts. (17.3 in the 1/4 with just the Dynomax and air intake) I haven't had time to run it since I added the other goodies. Anyway I will stand by my truck anyday.

Message: I'll second DakotaDan's suggestion. I've got a 4.7/5sp. QC, and I love it. Got plenty of get up and go, and I generally get about 17mpg (romping on it 5-6 times a tank) average. I can get about 20 on the highway--and this is bone stock, no mods, no bedcover. I don't think you're gonna gain any economy from a V6, and you sure ain't getting any more power.

Message: DON'T DO IT!! Acceleration, passing power, and gas mileage are all oxymorons when talking about V6's in QC's. Friends shouldn't let friends buy 3.9 V6's in anything...especially in QC's...I have a 3.9 in my 2002 RC (I also have a 48mm F&B TB, intake, headers, and Dynomax Super Turbo), and my truck is still SLOOOOOOWWWWWWW. Quick Silver's 3.9 QC must've been personally blessed by the Pope if it's really "quick". I got beat by a horde of pre-schoolers on tricycles. I'm glad that they were following their teacher to the ice cream store, and didn't know that I was racing them...

Message: I'll admit that the 3.9L is barn burner but she is good enough for me. Different strokes for different folks. Let's face it. You buy a V6 for economy and not racing. If you intended on racing then you should have bought a Lightning or the R/T. I did my mods because I wanted a little more get up & go and better fuel milage and I happy because I did them myself.
Pistolero, I am sorry you have a V6. I understand that this is your opinion and that you are entitled to it. Trade it in for a V8.
QckSlvrDak, get the 3.91s. It will help. I think I have 3.92s. Do be afraid to post your opinions and insights. You have the same right as Pistolero as long as everyone doesn't get rude.
Sav, Pistolero is right about the V6 not being a V8. If you need good pulling power and acceleration then V8 would be better. I get good MPG because I don't stomp on the pedal most of the time and I have a 5 speed.
I hope this helps. BTW. we all love our Daks no matter which engines otherwise you wouldn't write to this board.

Message: Guys, please don't take offense at my perhaps ill-timed effort at a little humor...I certainly didn't mean to maliciously insult anyone by poking a little fun at the 3.9's. Actually, my V6 can keep up with traffic just fine, it's only when I really need some acceleration at more than a leisurely clip that I find it lacking and a bit frustrating. My comments were also partially based on other posts that I'd seen 3.9 QC owners make, reporting that their trucks were very, very slow, which I would expect, given their weight and how underpowered the 3.9 seems to be in my RC. I'd had other Chrysler V6's in a '97 Intrepid and a Caravan, and they were both lively engines, so I just assumed that the 3.9 would be similar. I also figured that the "Magnum" moniker meant something. Maybe my V6 isn't really so slow...maybe, I'm just harder to please, or expect more than some folks. So, I'm actually glad that not all 3.9 QC owners are disgruntled...makes for a better quality of life!
Quick Silver, if I offended you, I apologize. Don't leave on my account...I usually go out of my way to make sure that I don't offend anyone. I was just really surprised to find that someone with a 3.9 QC thought their truck was quick, after reading of so many who didn't, and I found it somewhat difficult to believe that a heavier truck could outrun a similarly modded RC, with the same engine. You may be a better driver than those other guys, or maybe you have a unique truck, but, even if you don't, as long as you're happy with it, who cares what anyone else thinks?! Sure, I wish now that I'd gotten a V8, but I didn't, and aside from the 3.9, I like my truck just fine the way it is...I'm not going to go out and lose $5K on a trade just because it has a V6...I'll wait a few years, and maybe the Dakota will have the HEMI in it by then. Enjoy your truck, and don't take anything I said as an insult...I don't want to make enemies on this board, unlike some folks...

Message: It's not that bad... I have one also with 4X4 on top of that. I'm not beating anyone in races (at least nobody that KNOWS I'm racing them ; ) ) but I got it for myself and hauling the occasional item that would never fit into a trunk. I love my truck anyway.
I even did some light off roading at a construction site recently that impressed me how good these trucks are off road. They're great in the snow too. It's not just about ball-smashing acceleration, is it? I am very comfortable in this truck. The 2% of the time that I actually kick myself for not buying an 8 cyl. engine is offset by the 98% of the rest of the time when I'm happy with it!

Message: True, the V-6 QC is not the fastest truck but it gets me where I need to go. I am very satisfied with the performance compared to my previous truck (2000 Ranger 4 door w/3.0L). My QC is similar in power but makes up for it in size and comfort. It already has an exhaust and future mods include intake, TB, plugs, wires, RT wheels and whatever else I can squeeze out of my budget.

Message: I have a 2001 3.9V6 2Wheel Drive Dakota Quad Cab, and I have to say, I'm getting a lot better than 16.5mpg highway. I put 10 gallons in it the other day and got 220 miles out of it before I had to put more gas in it. That's 22mpg... given I do have a 5 speed, but I doubt the V8 can compare to that in any setup. Also, I've talked to a few people who had these engines in full size trucks and vans, and people tell me they've gotten over 300K miles out of it before a rebuild was needed. Peace of mind beats performance in my book any day. Also, the towing power isn't bad, I pulled a 20ft' offshore boat all around town and straight out of the boat landing with no problem. I love my 3.9, and if you drive it like you mean it, it's definitely not "slow". That's just my opinion.

Message: i have a 2000 qc 3.9 auto 2wd. i dont get the best mpg, but then again i live in the mountains in northeas georgia and i have a case of leadfootitis. with the mods that i have so far, it has been a great improvement on performance and mileage when i keep my foot out of it. i have also done some towing with my truck and it does pretty damn well for a 3.9. i even found out that the superchips performance program works better than the towing program when i towed a 20' trailer loaded down with random junk and my bed filled when i was helping a friend move recently. it will never be as good as a v8, but i have been very happy with it. i do have plans for many future mods including 1.7 rr's, transgo shift kit, 3.92s or 4.10s with limited slip. it has been a very good truck and a daily driver.
