Message: Hey,
Just wanted to say thanks to whoever that was that posted a possible solution for the heater in out trucks not blowing hot enough. I've been freezin' my @ss off for the past couple of winters because my heater only blew room temp air at best, and that was at low fan speed. Click it on high and it start chunkin' icicles at me. So after reading the post about backflushing the heater core, I ran out and got me a gallon of antifreeze and flushed the heater core and the engine. Needless to say, I have heat once again!! So, anyway, just wanted to say THANKS for the detailed info.

Message: Glad to here you have your heat again. I ran into the same problem at the begining of winter here in Maine, and man o man was it cold in the cab. People on the site recommended the same to me so I as well appreciate the help.

Message: I was just wondering...do ya'll really go out and work on your trucks when it gets below freezing up yonder in the northern regions? I live south of Houston, Texas and if it gets below 50 degrees, my nuckles will barely bend around a wrench.

Message: It only took about 15 min to do the flush, and thats with putting the hoses back on and filled. I would rather endure the few minutes of cold to gain the return of heat during the long drives. There is so much snow up here now thew have nowhere else to plow it. I would take Texas over this snow.

Here is an answer to the original question about the posters heater core. It is plugged. I had the same exact problem. I had flushed out my coolant system several times, but still no real heat coming from the heater. I then finally thought about it and realized the the convential way of flushing out a coolant system does not really flush out the heater core. The problem is that when you flush the coolant system out you normally connect the flushing water to the inlet side of the heater core hose and then backflush the system out through the radiator cap. This works fine for the engine and the radiator, but does not backflush the heater core. But for less than 99 cents and about 15 minutes you can easily backflush your heater core yourself. There was a suggestion on an earlier post to just reverse your inlet and outlet hose on the heater core and that would backflush it. This is true, but the gunk that is clogging up the heater core will just get flushed into you engine and will probably end up right back in your heater core. What you have to do is get a 5/8 inch female garden hose adapter. This can be purchased at just about any hardware store. Make sure it is the kind that slips inside the garden hose. Then with the engine cool you need to disconnect the outlet hose of the heater core from the engine. You need to do this at the water pump connection, which should be on the driver's side of the engine. Then insert the garden hose adapter into the end of the hose. Then disconnect the heater core inlet hose from the engine connection. On my Dakota this is easily done at the splice that is on the passengers side of the engine. This splice is where you normally connect to flush out the coolant system. Then hook a garden hose up to the outlet hose and turn on the water. Have someone help you turn on and off the water as you flush out the heater core. Try and collect atleast the first 2 gallons of stuff you flush out and dispose of this according to your local laws. After the first 2 gallons all you should get out of your heater core is dirty water. This should be ok to just dump on the ground but make sure first. You will probably have to flush the core for a good 5 minutes to fully clean it out. Then reconnect your heater hoses as they were and enjoy the heat.

(hee hee) Just Joshin - but most auto enthusiasts make it a priority to have a heated garage to work in.

Message: I too had the problem with the heat barely staying warm and that was on lowest speed. I froze my butt off driving through NM back in nov. I finally got off my butt to fix it and it turned out to be the thermostat. $3 heat works great.

Message: I'm up here in Maine, and today it's about 50 or 55. it's warm out!! during this winter the temp didn't hit 45 for about 4 to 5 weeks. the highest it got during those weeks was something like 35, maybe 40.

Message: Check the resistor pack for the blower motor. My fan would only blow on the high setting, I replaced the resistor pack and it works fine now. The part only cost $16 Can.
On my 2001, the pack was located under the glove box in the vent plumbing. On older trucks, it might be in the engine compartment on the firewall.

Message: Thanks for the info. My heat was getting worse as it got colder, so I replaced thermostat, no go. Replaced anti-freeze, no go.....Read in this site about backflushing a heater core, (was thinking about a new one}, Heat is back!!! THANK YOU!!!!

Message: Anyone know why it takes a 93 dakota so long to heat up. The temp gauge barely moves off the cold mark. Yoy have torun the engine for 10-15 minutes for there to be any warmth at all. I covered the radiator to stop some of the cold air and it still takes for ever to warm up. New radiator antifreeze and thermostat nothing seems to help. This is the coldest running truck i have ever seen. Any suggestions?

Message: I had the same problem with my heat....another trick you can do is put water in the line going to the heater core, than in short bursts blow air through it with a compressor. Do it a few times in both directions....I was surprised how much sediment came out...plus how good my heat was after I was done!
