I've noticed a fairly significant rattling/grinding/vibrating metal noise from under my 99 V-6 4x4 5spd as I am accelerating through the 2200 - 3000 rpm range, more noticable in first and second gear (but also audible in third). Seems like this occurs after the engine warms up. Is this just my crapalytic converter going bad or should I be looking for something else? Haven't had a chance to crawl around underneath to check for a loose heat shield or rocks wedged in the shield. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had something similar but I do not think the same as what you are describing.

I was hearing a noise that sounds like Metal rubbing together with sand and mud grinding or something. Happened after driving for a few miles. It drove me nuts. I finally got it in and I had bearing's in my transfer case that were worn so I had the whole thing rebuilt. It think the Main output bearing was the worst. The noise is gone now. I really thought it was a loose metal piece or something by the sound it made.

I hope this is not your problem. Just thought I would share mine wth you. Kind of sounds similar.

My parking brake cable rattles against my exhaust pipe. I would check that, otherwise the heatshield rattling against the body would be my best guess, usually you can just bend them slightly.

Dakota's are notorious for rattling throw-out bearings, but that is usually heard just at idle.

My '02 Dodge Dakota makes a rattling noise when I accelerate in almost all gears except 5th. It hasn't affected the way it drives in any way, just gets annoying and feels like the truck is gonna explode. Not really, I'm only exagerating because I'm worried for my truck. I'm gonna get it checked out by a mechanic before any damage occurs.
Yeah sorry, that's probably not much help. But I've been searching around the internet to see if anyone with a Dakota has the same problem.
Good luck with it!

Mine did the same thing, then I got really rough on it and blew all the crap in the cat out the rear. Get under the truck and hit the Cat with the meat of your hand, if it rattles, that is the problem.

Mine does the exact same thing.. to me though it feels more like an
internal engine rattle.. Or maybe a drivetrain issue. Can you feel it
in the pedals? I can. A lot more vibration than should be. She runs
fine and idles smooth so its not missing. Its really a strange
problem and im starting to hate it... I took it to a shop and they
drove it but never took it up to 3000rpm. So didnt feel it. I would
really like to know what it is or at least have some idea so I can start
to tackle this.. ANY help would be appreciated.
