Subject: Converting throttle body to carb IP: Logged
Message: I had the misfortune of breaking down on I-95 and being "helped" by a local garage. Because of the help, my wiring harness is burned to a crisp. Dodge doesn't make replacement harnesses for my 89 3.9L Dakota so I would like to replace the throttle body with a carb. Before I throw money to the carb, what all is required to make sure this will work? I want to circumvent the computer and just run an electronic distributor with a different fuel pump. Will my current distributor work? What are all the changes and more important, where can I buy the parts. Thanks for any help anyone can shed.

Message: You may want to try junk yards for the stock replacement parts. Splice in as necessary (solder and put shrink tape for good connection and seal).
Don't know what state or smog requirements you have, but consider thesebefore modifying the engine.
The computer controls fuel, spark, and air (everything for fire). it gets info from different sensors, one of the most important is the oxygen sensor. By-passing any of these screws up the computer big-time causing any aray of problems.
If you can legally modify in your state, you might check with hot-rod shops for you best options, since they're concerned with performance, not smog. Good luck!

Message: I'd try the junk yard replacement. To get rid of the computer you would have to rewire a good chunk of the front end.
The parts you would need are an intake (87 manifold would work or you can try to get a 2 barrel to fit on the one you have) Mopar Performance had a 4 barrel manifold years ago and is just about impossible to find, a distributor
(Mancini Performance had conversion kits a few years ago or you can use a V8 and put a slant 6 star wheel in it). You can use the stock fuel pump but will have to get a pressure regulator to cut the fuel pressure down.
The computer controls the fuel pump and alternator and power to the distributor (everything needs a reference to get it to run, or atleast fool the computer into thinking it has a reference). Being that your wiring harness is cooked already you'll have to figure out whats burnt fix it then modify it to run the carb.
Also the computer works the A/C cruise control and I can't tell you about the 4x4. So all that will have to be wired in to work.
I know I forgot other thing. Is it impossible, no. Is it a pain in the butt, yup. I think you'd be better off finding a harness and patching it into the old on, I think it'll be alot easier.
