Subject: Ported my TB
IP: Logged

Message:
So i just ported my TB last night and got it back on and reset the PCM. Is it normal for the 3.9 to idle about 400 rpms above where it used too. Its at about 1200 right now and it was at 800 or so in park before. It drops back to normal when i put it in to gear. I have put about 90mi on it since i put it back on.

Any input would be great
Brian

Even though I drive a v8 with a larger throttle body I can still relate. I tend to idle at 1k rpm's when I used to idle at 500. Sometimes I just flick the ac onto high for a few sends and turn it off and it goes back down, or sometimes rev the engine into the 3k rpm range .

if u have the tps sensor mod, then try turning it down a little bit to compensate for the high idle

Is the TPS mod the one where you drill a hole in your sensor adjust the voltage or something?

Thanks

Resetting the PCM is probalby whats causing your high idle. Let it go for a while to re learn everything and adjust to any differences caused by porting the TB. It should come back down some in time. I adjusted my TPS sensor to (try to) help with the stumble off idle, when I did that the thing was idling at about 1000 RPM for a few days when I'd start it up, then it would drop down after a min or so. Now it idles at about 750 or so regularly.

I just used a dremel to take off the air horns and remove the air step. Supposed to help with hessitation during hard acceleration. Give it a little more pep. Ill post some pics soon.

when you reset your computer, let it idle for awhile so it can learn your idle speed. It may also be a good idea to clean your idle motor (sensor on back of throttle body). When i finally got my motor back together, i had to let it idle about 5-10 minutes before it finally went down.

I had the same problems...
It's definitely not normal for the V6 to idle that high. You should have an idle of about 650-700 rpm. If that's not the case, there are some possible causes: stuck throttle cable, bad TB gasket, minimum throttle too high, dirty or bad IAC motor, bad TPS sensor... If you reset the PCM, be sure to let the engine idle for some minutes without touching the throttle, then turn the engine off.

I did mine about a year ago. It also idled high, after a few minutes it settled down. I watched the tachometer slowly come down and settle after about five or ten minutes.

Well i think i figured out part of my problem...I am a Dumb A$$... I should have double checked my work. I left the little hose thing that attaches to the front off. Once i realized this i reattached it and the idle droped but then i figured i should reset the pcm again so it could relearn it the right way. But...its back too idleing high after another 80mi.

Okay:

I installed a F&B billet TB on my sixer, and one of the things that was done during the installation was to clean off the IAC sensor (the one with the brass/gold plunger deal). First thing you do is take the sensor out, then take the o-ring off of the base where it fits into the TB. Clean off the end with Carb&Choke cleaner, this will remove gasoline/dirt/crud and deposits off of the plunger. DO NOT push or twist the plunger... if you have to handle it be VERY gentle as this can screw up the IAC and cause you to buy another. Once the plunger is clean lightly grease the o-ring and put it back in place. Reinstall the cleaned IAC sensor and reset the PCM. That might do the trick.

What kind of grease should i use to lube the oring with?

Right now when my engine is cold it idles at the normal RPM and as the engine warms up the RPMs rise back up to the 1200 or so, it is also has a pulsing too it.

Thanks for the help guys i hope to get this figured out soon.

Oh and another thing, I just called my local goodyear and asked about how much i would be for a new sensor, and he started talking about "standard procedure is setting the baseline RPM when installing a new TB." Does this guy know what he is talking about?

No idea what he means by baseline rpm... maybe minimum throttle? I paid same 40$ for a non-mopar IAC motor that works all right. The mopars are a bit more expensive like 50-60$, I think.
Just take the whole TB off again, change the gasket, reinstall it, check all the things mentioned in the above messages and you should be fine.
If the parts are all right and the work is done ok, the worst you can get is something like a 'lazy' idle, meaning that the engine returns a little reluctantly to idle rpm at times...

After a little research i found out that the end of the plunger deal is only supposed to be 1" or less from the based of the motor, and mine was like 1 1/2 so i will get a new IAC tomorrow. They are $66 at my dodge local dealer.

So for a little update. I have now tried a new IAC motor, TB new gasket, and have done my best to make sure everything is clean with no luck. When i start the motor cold it idle's at 800 and it climbs up to 1200 as the engine warms up. This is getting a little frustrating... Is it posible that i ported it too much and now air is flowing around the disc things? When i hold it up to the light you can see a slight halo. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
