Subject: converting Differential: 3.21 to 3.55
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 97 v6 dakota with the factory 3.21 8.25" standard ['open'?] differential. I want to convert it to the 3.5x [4? 5?] rear differential for when I put larger tires on it. I am also considering the PowerTrax or Detroit Locker option to develop better power off-road and in foul weather. Do I just need the Ring and Pin set for the basic conversion of the Differential or do I need more part? Also, any advice on the Detroit Locker systems would be appreciated.

If your chaning your gears, might as well go to the 3.92 gears. Better than 3.55; you'll lose a tiny bit of top end speed, but you should feel feel much better acceleration and starting power. But hell, I guess you'd notice that anyway if your going from 3.21 to 3.55. Just figured if your gonna change it out, might as well just go all the way!!!

The limited slip will require just chaning the carrier assembly out. The gears will just require the ring and pinion (about $200 any ratio) and install kit recommended ($100.) Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong cause I would like to know more about how to do this also. I'm thinking about 3.92 gears down the road sometime. Unfortuneatly I'd have to do front and rear cause 4WD.

Make me an offer, Its not new though, has probably 60k on it but worked perfectly when it was pulled. It will only work on your truck if you have the 27spline rear which is from 1996 and before
