Subject: 3.92 gear swap IP: Logged
Message: Hi everyone.
I am the proud owner of a 03 Quadcab 4x4 with the 3.9 automatic. This thing wont get out of it's own way. I am going to do a rear gear swap to the 3.92. Do I need to do anything to the front diff.

Message: Yeah you could do that as long as you never put it into 4wheel drive again. If you change the rear then yes you will need to change the front. There are a few rigs that 4wheeler & offroad mag. have shown that do have different gears in the front and rear but those rigs have bigger tires in the rear than in the front. I think the difference was like 35" in the front and 38" or 40" in the back to compensate.

Message: If you have done gear work, it's not too bad. If not, take it to a shop. If it's not done right, you will have a bad whine from the gears and ruin both gear sets.
