Subject: Changing Oil Filter IP: Logged
Message: Hey,
I changed my oil the other day, and had a heck of a time with the oil filter... the way that it sits on my 02 club cab 3.9 v6 lets it drain over onto the surrounding components... granted these are all metal surfaces... but it makes for a messy job... does anybody have any hints/tips on how I could do this job cleaner? Oil filter relocation kit? Right now I drive it up a set of ramps to get down there... maybe going up on one ramp and leaving it at an angle would help? Any ideas...How do you do it?

Message: i got a 4x4 so i take out the filter thru the wheel well but it still drips-- they say you can take a cut off 2 liter coke bottle and slid it over the the filter so any drips end up in the coke bottle. tried it and it still dripped - i'll cut the plastic bottle some more and try agian

Message: if you don't want to get dirty, hire it out to jiffy lube, you"ll really get "lubed" by them.

Message: one trick I have used in the past is to use an awl and punch a hole through both chambers of the filter and drain all the oil from it before taking it off the engine. It still makes a mess but not as bad.

Message: I changed the oil for the first time on my 2002 3.9 4x2 RC last night...put Mobil 1 10W-30 in it. I jacked up the front and put jackstands under the frame rails...this helped more of the oil drain from the oil pan. I did the 2-liter soda bottle cut in half trick. Use a filter wrench to just get the filter to the point where you can spin it with your hand, then put the bottle (the half with the cap) over the filter and snug it all the way up against the block. Turn the bottle and filter together until the filter drops off in the bottle, then lower it carefully to keep the oil from spilling out. I didn't lose a single drop...surprised the heck out of me...no muss, no fuss :-)

Message: Save yourself all the aggravation of worrying about oil spillage. Just spray the engine down with brake cleaner where it has spilled on the engine. It takes two seconds and will remove every drop of oil.

Message: Ya, changing the oil filter is a messy job, but it's not like my engine wasnt already filthy anyway, But like mddak said, i have a 4wd too, so i take it out the wheel well, I havnt really found a way to not get dirty, it doesnt really bother me though.

Message: the easiest way i've found to change the filter,
on my 00, is from the top of the truck. jsut reach
down past your headers and undo it. its a lil
cleaner and then the oil at least isn't on you.
