Subject: 98 Dakota engine quits IP: Logged
Message: My 98 Dakota cranks and runs great except... when the temperature drops below 50, and after I've driven for about 2-3 miles, come to a stop, the motor just stops. It will then crank but will not turnover. After 10 minutes, the engine starts and I'm good for another day. Anyone have ideas or have had this happen?
Thanks in advance

Message: i was thinking it might have something to do with a fuel filter, but our trucks don't have one... i really don't know what it is... it might be a wire in the harness... the same thing happened to my mom's pontiac. has the problem become worse lately? like does it get progressivly bad? if it does then i think it's the wiring harness, if not, i don't know what it could be. maybe a bad coil, but that wouldn't explain why it works the rest of the day... you've got me stumped, but let me know what you find.

Message: Thanks Gabe, looks like it is a stumper for all the Dodge gurus as no one seems to have an answer or even a suggetion, except you. My only hope is that a good error code is stored in the computer.
It does not get worse, just happens in the cold. Not once did the problem occur in spring, summer or fall. Weird
Thanks for response.

Message: Ahh Next time it quites climb under the hood and check to see if you have fuel. There is a port on the left fuel line and it has a schrader valve, while cranking push the schrader valve in and fuel should come out if not fuel pump. Next check for spark. Take a plug wire off and stick a small screwdriver in it and hold it a 1/4" away from the block. While someone cranks it see if you have spark. That will get you started then you will know what system is causing the malfunction.

Message: Tigerdude,
I e-mailed you from my office today...not certain you received it. Check your crank sensor, it could be it's served its useful life. I had similar problems after about 90,000 miles on my 3.9L V6 5spd 2wd. The simptoms started out like yours, then when it failed it toasted my distributor cap and coils. Good luck!

Message: Never been shutout at a Forum before. I was getting worried. Thanks guys. That is what I needed, just a starting point as this one had me stumped.
I will report back. It has not failed in 2-3 days but then it has not been that cold in 2-3 days here in GA.
Thanks again,
Tigerdude

Message: ok....what and where is the crank sensor Dakota TC? I have a 98 cc 3.9 V6 with 75K, and it sometimes has the problem of taking a long time to kick over. It cranks over fine, but just takes like ten seconds for it to actually start. Don't think it is the battery, spark, or gas.
Thanks

Message: GenIII - the crank sensor is a finger like probe that extends into your bell housing over the ring gear. It's sort of an optical sensor that sees motion as the gear turns. That is, of course, provided the sensor isn't either fried, or filthy.
Have fun!

Message: I just had the same problem -- same engine, same year -- but eventually it wouldn't start at all.
The shop replaced both the CAM and crank sensors; there was no error code till one of them was replaced, then the second one showed up too.

Message: An hour north of Toronto with my '98 3.9 5spd 2wd xcab. I just finished replacing my entire exhaust system with o2 sens and just had my injectors cleaned on the machine at Midas last week. On mornings when she gets cold, she'll barely start. I have to give her gas or she just dies until she's a little warn then she idles fine.
For the with the quitting after a couple miles, try loosening your fuel cap. If you're not venting properly, she'll just quit. Ever see a lawnmower run&quit, run&quit, exact same thing. Worth a try

Message: Just because the CEL is not lit, doesn't mean there isn't a code stored. When there is a problem, the particular has to happen on 3 start/stop cycles before the light will come on.
Did you turn the jey as I posted? If you did, any codes come up?
