Message: My 92 6ers went bad. For me at a certian rpm range (~1200-1500 if i remember right) the truck would go on bucking fits. Basically it felt like you stabbed the brakes and released them quickly. It would do this a couple of times in rapid succession and then be fine for a random time.

Message: My '92 3.9 Dakota (80,000 miles) died on the freeway because of a broken distributor rotor. The mechanic recommended replacing the distributor gear and bushing, or else I could expect more broken distributor parts in the future. I believe this is a common problem with the early V6s. The truck never idled or ran oddly.
There are many postings here (www.dodgedakotas.com) related to this malady.

Message: I changed mine not too long ago. They are the same as a small block v8. Mine's from a 318 now.

Message: Very easy to check - remove the dist. cap and try moving the rotor back and forth, if it moves a bit - the bushing may need to be replaced. More common is the wonderfully slack timing chain they put in these engines. If yours is replaced with a factory type, make sure to install the tensioner that is available. Better still is to use an aftermarket, double-roller type (yes, even in a 3.9) I have had excellent results with either fix.
