Yeah when mine went out, i would be driving fine until it reached about a half tank of fuel, then it would start hesitating and missing like crazy. it was so bad that it sounded like it was going to cut off. Anyways. it is way easier to run it nearly empty, siphon remaining gas out, lower tank and replace pump. If you take the bed off, thats just plain retarded.

Actually, Chris the bed removal method is very common ... having done the fuel pump replacement I would say they are both about an equal headache however the bed removal is very easy IF you have the extra help and a method of lifting it IE: an engine hoist or a pulley over a branch etc. I will be replacing my pump this weekend and I have opted to go with the bed removal this time as I have a full tank and will not stand around and wait for it to syphon out. I can remove my bed in under 15 minutes. Course I've done it many times so I don't have to go looking for anything.

why does everyone think its stupid to have an inside the tank fuel pump? Every modern engine built in the last 9 or so years has it that way. its because the engines are fuel injected, its there to keep the fuel pressurized so that one does not have to pump the gas in the morning to start the engine like with a carbureted one.

You don't even need to remove the bed!!! Remove the bolts, then place a 4x4 between the frame and the bed. This is the MECHANICS trick to get at the fuel pump and the fuel gage gauge sending unit. This part commonly fails and causes the fuel gage to spas-out. Easy to fix this problem too. Just rub off the carbon build-up from the swiper with a rubber eraser tip

what about putting the box back on. Ive never taken one off before. Is it just a matter of lining up the bolts and tightening, or is there issues with getting the body lines to line up.

Used to have an S-15 and the body lines on it never lined up, looked horrible, just don't wanna mess up my dak just to save a few hours of labour.

Any concerns with reusing the same bolts. Heard somewhere that box mounting bolts should be replaced whenever removed????

Thanks for any advice

Use the old bolts if they look ok. This isn't critical front-end suspension work. You can line up holes using the pointed end of a pry bar. Just install the nuts on a couple of threads and check your lines. If you are off, adjust the bed with a 2x4 lever. tighten up the bolts when you are satisfied.

DO NOT REUSE THE OLD BOLTS !!!

THE FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL CLEARLY STATES NEW BOLTS
NEED TO BE USED AS THEY ARE IMPREGNATED WITH A THREAD
LOC TYPE MATERIAL.

IF YOU WANT YOUR BED TO FALL OFF THAT'S YOUR BUSINESS.

My bed's still on... three times. One fuel pump, all bushings, and a sending unit job. No problems. Is it possible different generation have different hardware? I forgot to mention that every post I make applies to absolutely every make and model of any natural aspirated gas combustion motor. Seriously, use a small dot of medium thread locker if you think your bed will fly off because you forgot to retighten the bolts right. Impregnated, huh?

hey dude I respect your post about not re-using the old bolts, but have you ever heard of a product called Loc-Tite ? just run a die up the old bolt to remove anything left behind from when you removes it, and a tap up the nut, then re-apply Loc-Tite as you assemble it. A drop or two is all you need.

carter fuel pump at napa has a real filter on the bottom, the carters at autozone/advance have a screen. I went with the napa one for my 95, cost about $15 more than the one at advance/autozone. Worth the extra drive and $15 for the filter imho.

00, 4 cyl pump just went out. It started sputtering on the hwy and after a substantial loss of power it finally died. The dealer said it was the pump but, I've got the dam tank halfway off and I can't for the life of me figure out how to disconnect the wires. They put the 2 connectors so close you can't get a tool or a finger in there to pry the dam thing loose. Oh and I got my new pump for $230, from O'rileys, best I could find.

Oh, and I know about the red clip on the eletric connector, it's the blue wedge things on the fuel line that are kicking my arse. I need a blow torch, a sick of TnT or something!

And I don't have an engine hoist to lift the whole thing off either, pout pout.

So did you get the elctrical connector off? The way you get the fuel line off is grap ahold of the fuel line and connector collar, push forward on the COLLAR with thumb and finger, and then pull back on the LINE(not the collar as you will lock it again). By the way, it is much easier to pull the bed back 2 ft than to drop the tank.

Well, I got the tank off, now all that stands in my way is the lock "nut." Now all I need is hurculese or the incredible hulk to come along and remove it for me... I thought I was pretty strong but I was reduced to a withering mass of jello after I attempted and failed miserably to get the "nut" off.... Any suggestions?

A block of wood and hammer should do it.The nut comes off counter clock wise just keep tapping and changing places where you tap (lightly) it.

Well, we got it off and replaced but when we disconnected the fuel line from the pump the rubber seals fell out, and now I can't figure out how many were in it and what order they are supposed to be in. I've tried calling around but it's sunday and the race is on, so without a miracle, I'm sitting still till tomorrow!
