Subject: Is timing adjustable? 97 3.9v6

The subject says it all. On the 97 Dakota 3.9v6, is the timing adjustable like it was/is on other vehicles? If so, how [other than twisting distributer]?

Timing is not adjustable. Its done by the PCM. You can only index the distributor wich is only ensuring the position of the distributor is correct, so the sensors can do their job.

The dist. controls injector timing. It is adjustable. It does make a difference in idle quality. I adjusted my 96 as well as a 97 3.9.
Much smoother Idle for me since I was at a +5 on the inj timing. Slight rise in idle rpm also. The 97 got a little more throttle response. his was a +3. Every little bit helps.

What did you use to set the fuel sync with? I asked our local dealer, but they refused to set it to anything but the factory setting.

you cannot change the timing by turning the distributer. If you moved it then you should move it back because it wont be good for the motor. The computer controlls timing using the crank position sensor, tps, coolant sensor, and the iat. There is a mod that you can do with the crank position sensor that can adjust the timing.. it like the tps mod where you move it up or down a little... i dont know the full details but its one of the only ways to do it... besides buying expensive ignition boxes

What PLow dak is referring is is called cam sync. he in not talking about base ignition timing he is talking about fuel injector timing, twisting the distributor effects fuel injector timing, setting that can only be done by a dealership or someone with access to a DRB III. I have heard that you can make it run better by making the sync on the plus side because the injector will literally spray the fuel into the cylinder, in other words the intake valve is open farther when the injector sprays. KRC does tell on their website a way to fool the computer into adding more timing, since the computer looks at the crank sensor, you can adjust it. i personally don't think you should mess with any of this stuff unless you KNOW what you are doing. If your wondering what i do for a living, I'm a Service Tech at a Dodge Dealership.
