Subject: Idle fluxuation...

Message:
My 2000 Dak has always had a weird idle problem. Generally its fine but every once in a while, while idleing, with the clutch in of course, the engine speed will drop to below 500rpm and then pull back up. It always starts fine, never stalls, and performs great. Any ideas on where to tackle this? I can't isolate the problem cuz it will happen in the cold, heat after start up or after several hours. Weird...

my 98 4x4 does the samething as yours seth, except my would sometimes stall when the truck was cold. i cleaned my battery terminals really good, and that got rid of the stalling problem, but the idle still drops...

Does this only happen when your disengaging the clutch (pedal in) or does it happen in neutral also??? I'm far from a mechanic, but that iddling dropping with the clutch pedal in seems like what would happen if you don't have the pedal in all the way. Clutch may not be fully "disengaging." I'd ask some folks who know more about it if that may be the problem.

Its really just something with the engine. Clutch in all the way or sitting in nuetral, it will happen either way. I'm about to hit 50k miles so i'm going to give it a good going over, new oil, filter, plugs, check compression, all that stuff so hopefully i can find something out or hopefully it might go away.

I had this similiar problem at 35K on my 98 Dak. There is a sensor at the top of the throttle body in the back (toward the firewall) that gets dirty and needs to be cleaned. Take the black plastic air hat off the top of your throttle body and spray intake manifold cleaner in there. The dealer charged me $100 bucks to do this the first time, but when I saw how easy it is I've done it myself since.

Jack's refering to the IAC motor. Its a little servo motor that opens a small vavle to let air into the engine when the throttle plates are closed all the way, otherwise it would choke the engine. Yea, if your having idle problems all the time, thats the first place to check. Clean that guy out and it could fix your problem.
