Subject: Traction ... IP: Logged
Message: All,
Here in Southern Cali, it rarely rains, but when it does, traction is a nightmare. I have a '99 V6 3.9L Dakota Sport and I can't see to keep the rear passenger-side tire from spinning out when I tap the gas in a corner when it's wet. It seems to do okay going straight, but even then, when coming from a stop, I'll spin out. More so when it's wet, but it happens when it's dry some too. Just the passenger-side rear tire, the driver-side rear tire doesn't move.
Disclaimer: I am an automotive idiot, so please use laymen’s terms when answering questions.
Question: Is there anything I can do, out side of tires and expensive suspension work that will help my traction in corning and off the line?
Thanks!

Message: Hey Josh,
I got the same problem. We got a disease man... it's called Leadfootitus. Aka...a heavy foot. Lighten up on the gas and you won't spin out as easily. You could also add a bit of weight to the back end. That should help too.
Later,
Josh too

Message: Yea, I've had the same problem with my truck in rain. Off the line the right rear wheel will spins like hell sometimes. You have whats called an "open differential" on your rear axle. It basically puts power to only one wheel under "slippery" conditions. Your best bet is put some weight in the back over the wheels. Don't put the weight all the way back to the tail gate cause it could just make it worse sometimes, but anyways, weight anywhere back there helps. I just had a limited slip differential installed, I wonder how that will make it act in the rain. Anyone have any thoughts on this??

Message: True, I do have a bit of a "lead foot", but was more looking for something mechanically I could do to increase traction; I would be interested in an LSD, what's something like that cost? And would it help?

Message: mpil1 -- I had the posi unit installed in mine. i also swapped the old gears (3.21's) and put in 3.91's. Its one of the best mods i did for my truck in my opinion. With the added acceleration the traction is great, especially on wet surfaces, not as much tire spinning. I can still spin the tires in the rain but then again who can't.

Message: I had a 4x4 shop put Trac-Lock in this weekend. Didn't bother to have gears changed from 3.55, cause with 4x4 I'd have to do front and rear, and that would start costing $$$!! But anyways, I got all the parts for $190, and the shop charged me $250 to install it. I say the $250 to have it installed is well worth it rather than me try to figure out what the hell I'm doing back there when its 20° out.
