I got stories, man.

First of all if you are letting a garage do the rotations, find a new garage. Everytime?? Anyhow, Yes. I forget how many but at least 2 studs where busted and at least two were stripped/crossthreaded. AND those f'ers lost a couple lugs. I usually do the job myself but I bought the free for life labor on rotation with their tires. The thing is they get lower paid "technicians" who dont know about torque and stud ratings. Every shop I have surveyed uses the torque limiting sockets, but these kids are too busy too hand turn them a few threads and zip them on..

They didn't even tell me they did this garbage.

Want the name of the business? I don't want to piss anybody off but this is true and I have heard it over and over from other people going to Quicky Cheep Tire Shops.

I've never broken a stud while tightening a lug nut, if the impact gun is capable of breaking the studs that easily then i wouldn't want those studs on my truck. I have however broken a few studs taking lugnuts off. I think it is usually caused be corroded studs or cheap airtools. The cheap airguns that don't have much power seem to break them more often because they have to sit there and hammer on the stud longer. Thats what most tire shop have, the cheap harbor fright tools. Ever since i bought a $250 air gun i haven't broke a single one.

Does your shop read this forum? he, he.

See I knew somebody would take it the wrong way. Here you got two people saying kids and their impact wrenches broke some studs...

Just curious, mr magoo, you never heard or seen of the tire specialty garages damaging threads and bending up wheels on the mounter? No one you work with lost a nut or busted a stud? It has been going on the 30 years I have been in the biz. I want to know who you work for so I can send you guys my whole family's business!

Just one more note before I go. Tire manufactures and the auto-makers agree and recommend you always do the final torque by hand with a torque wrench. I do. I also watch every time anyone services anything on my cars and trucks and never seen them use the torque wrench. They always use the impact wrench with the torque limiting socket.

no... no... I didn't take it the wrong way. I know what you're saying, people screw up, or are just too lazy to walk 10 feet to get the torque wrench.

I do tighten them by hand, and then use a torque wrench. In fact, we even made it basically company policy to do that.

And yea, I've heard and seen them places do it. I've had them break taking them off because of crossthreading from another time their vehicle was serviced.

...it's just that I was basically saying that he was overtorquing his wheels because he said everytime he takes off his wheels, a stud breaks, or as another guy above said, "if you are letting a garage do the rotations, find a new garage."

...I was just saying.

Thanks for your info, I thought I was crazy or something. Anyhow it is like zen or something doing it at home. walking from one side to the other five times is good for the back and the membrane and saves enough cash for a 12-pack, Nice.

I knew people who live here do good work like you because we got this forum to educate all of us. Keep it up.

It happens when they go to pull the wheels off. I have started asking them to torque them also and i have switched shops and they all blame it on who did it last. We will see what happens.

I work in a tire shop. And in fact most of you have been into one of our stores at least once in your life. I've seen it all. Bent wheels broken studs cross threaded studs and broken everything. But the flip side is, if we break it, bend it, bust it or destroy it and it was OUR fault we will replace it or fix it for free no questions asked. When I am putting a tire back on I ALWAYS spin it on a few threads by hand. Then I use a torque stick on my $300 dollar impact gun and then when I get all 4 tires back on the car I check everylug nut by hand with a torque wrench. The reason those kids dont have time to spin on your lug nuts by hand is because the customer is hounding us to get the work done and fast. By the way I work in a Sears Auto Center. so if those places arent doing that stuff come see me and I will take care of your dak.

I religously use Sears for alignments and completely trust their service because of my experience with them. I agree with everything you said. I get good service and advice wether I ask or not. Once I saw a problem (print out for pre and post alignment stats not provided) I took it to a manager at another location and said that the other location screwed up and gave me another alignment and printouts.

I don't hink it matters what place you go, there will be screw ups. Everytime I have anyone remove my wheels, I ask them specifically to hand torque. I have had everyone from dealers to quicky cheap tire shops, and they will almost all torque the wheels with the gun. One time, it took me (at 365 lbs and a competitive powerlifter) about 5 minutes with a 3/4" drive breaker bar to get one lug nut back off. What really matters is to find a place where the techs really care. This can be the mobil station on the corner, pep boys, or wherever. Its the individual shop and the individual techs that make the difference.

Okay, so I don't have the only 1997 dakota with lug nut and stud problems. So far I have found that I have had to replace six studs, only on the rear axle, never the front. When I finally found a dealer that stocked them, I checked to make sure that the nuts fit the studs. You guessed it, one of the studs was already damaged and the nut wouldn't even go on more than a full turn. I always use a torque wrench on my own street cars. I have put on thousands of lug nuts at the track during pit stops and I have never had this happen on any vehicle. This problem seems to be related to tolerance stacking, as far as I can see.
