Subject: Improving traction IP: Logged
Message: I'm moving to the Big Island of Hawaii where it rains a lot. My experience with rain and my Dak is frightning! How can I improve the traction in the rear without having to add weight?

Message: add about two hundred and fifty pounds of sandbags in the back, centered above the axle, that would be one solution

Message: I've got a similar concern. But I wish I only had rain to deal with. I've been driving through snow, ice, and freezing rain. If the road is slippery, my tires will spin. When my tires spin, even if I'm on flat even ground the backend of the truck will slide to the right. This morning there was frost on the road and while driving down the highway going over a frozen overpass, the tires slipped and the backend swung out. Having the backend of a the truck slide out while doing 60 mph down the interstate is not a pleasant experience. I was prepared for it to happen and was able to correct it but it just makes you not want to drive when you have to be on edge.
Obviously a 4x4 would be better than my 4x2 and additional weight might help some. Is there anything else? Are there certain tires that work better on the Dakotas?

Message: In addition to more weight and better tires, Limited-Slip should help add traction, especially in snow I've read.

Message: In Hawaii you don't need to worry about snow. Defantly better tires, traction bars, and a Limited slip. If your not happy w/that then add weight.

Message: If you still have the Goodyear Eagle LS Tires on your truck, replace them-they are junk. I absolutely hated those tires in the rain. I replaced with some BF Goodrich T/A Scorchers and they were awesome in the rain. I just recently repalce those with Kumho Venture ST tires and they are great in the rain too.
Ditch the eagle tires!!

Message: If you check out TruckPerfomance.com, you can find something I am thinking about: the PowerTrax No-Slip Traction system. They claim it works better than the limited slip system that was optional. Don't know if it works or not, but I'm thinking of it for mild off-road use. Drawback: $425+.

Message: I added a limited slip to mine and it helped, but trucks just don't have very much weight in the rear. Lowering will affect the weight transfer. I'm doing mine today. Just a 2/3, but thats where I want to be for the roads I have to use.
