Message: Hi. Its seems like you know alot of stuff about the 3.9L in the Gen Is. I have a 1990 V6. 111,000 miles. I have a few mods. dual flowmaster, K&N cone intake, Jacobs entire ignition system, edelbrock headers, no cat/smog system. I am also running 5ins lift and 31 ATs. My 6er can run 85 mph on cruise cont on I 75 with no prob. Or I can jump her from stop light to light. But I want a v8 to build.
I have researched the V8 318 swap alot. Need the swaps.com swap kit. Has new mounts, oil pan, etc. Of course the electric fan is a must. But what about the wiring? Does Painless wiring have a swap kit? Or do I have to have one made? And any other info you got would be great. Thanks.

Message: Painless doesn't make any harnesses specifically for our trucks, but they do have some universal harnesses. I have never used one so i don't know how easy there are to install or how good they would work. Your best bet would be to go to a junkyard and get a main engine wiring harness out of a v8 Dakota or maybe even a Jeep.
As with any engine swap there maybe a few things you have to fabricate but if you can get parts from a v8 truck it should be pretty easy and straightforward.
Another option would be to get a carburated V8 and convert it to throttle body fuel injection, Holley make digital programmable fuel injection systems that you program with a laptop. The kit costs about $1500, and then you would need to splice some wires together to make all your gauges work.

Message: Thanks Jon. By the way, what type of truck do you have? Obviously a dak but.....
I have kinda planned on finding a late 80s ram or van with the 318. Then take everything from it. Wiring, engine, mounts, everything. Hopefully to keep the Fuel Inj. But about HP #, could i get more out of a Carbed 318? Are there more options for modifications?
I have also thought about trying to get a 340 mopar to get alitle larger disp. engine. I just want to make the swap/$$$ worth the time and effort before I start. Thanks

Message: You won't really get any more power out of a carbed engine, you can make it run richer for a little more power but it will use lots of gas. A properly tuned fuel injected engine it more reliable, efficient and drivable than a carbed vehicle, especially if your into offroading. But theres lots of performance parts out there for both. You might even be able to find a performance crate engine that will come complete with all the wiring and everything.
BTW My dak is a '96 Sport V6 2WD, with a Centerforce II clutch, underdrive pullies, cowl induction, nitrous, electric fan, Flowmaster exhaust, etc.
My real toy is a 92 f-150 custom with 9 inches of lift and 36"x12.5" super swampers and a 2000 watt sound system. I'm building a 450hp 351W V8 for that right now.
Did i mention i'm broke?
