Message: What was your original problem? - Sunds expensive for a rebuilt..
Are the warranties the same? - Usually a new has a longer warranty than rebuilt. Mine is in the shop now with sensor problems.

Message: 2001 V6 2WD - Occasionally slips when shifting from 1 to 2. It's like the transmission can't make up it mind which gear to go into. fluid was changed at 30,000. Now it has 80,000 miles. i am going to put NAPA transmission cleaner stuff in and drive it to the flush shop.

Message: I had mine rebuilt for $1600 (1996 3.9L 4x4). I've also see remanufactureds available online for $795 plus shipping. Of course you'd have to pay for installation too ... but you'd still be way ahead of $2700 wouldn't you think?

Message: I have a classic 3.9 OD trouble that may shed light on others trouble. My Dakota ('99-78k) will shift fine until I reach operating temp. (180) than OD will drop-out causing high rpm. In my research I came across the following response, presumably from Dodge, addressing this problem:
"The transmission is controlled by a drive-train computer. If you scan the computer, it will tell you the fault-code of your malfunction. Not all OD problems store faults. A tps voltage change of 3% will drop OD. Speed sensor glitch can drop OD but you might notice a speedometer bounce as this occurs. There may be a temperature cut-out switch on the pressure line at trans, not all models had this switch, its purpose was to drop the OD if the trans began to overheat. If customer is pulling a trailer, he may be overstressing the trans and the cut-out switch is doing exactly what it was designed to do, disable the OD when the trans fluid reaches 230 degrees. The OD is controlled by the computer supplying ground for the solenoid inside the trans. If there is a voltage drop on that wire, such as a loose terminal or connector, the OD will work for a while but the resistance causes heat and more heat increases resistance, eventually the OD will quit. This however should store an OD solenoid fault."
I would welcome comments on this and I hope this, along with the sensor changes, will help many people from getting ripped-off for a "rebuilt" transmission! Greg in Detroit

Message: Mine does it too...still trying to diagnose the problem. Not normal though. According to my grandpa: overrev = slipping; slipping = BAD.
So far here's what I've heard could be the problem:
1 of the 2 sensors/solenoids on the transmission (1 I believe requires dropping the pan)
Transmission temperature sensor (I think that's what it's called...it's on the radiator line somewhere)
If you find out the cause PLEASE keep up updated.

Message: I have a 2003 Quad cab that has been slipping between 2nd and 3rd gear. This is the fifth time I've had to take it to the dealer. I have a meeting today, April 1, 2004, with Chrysler and my dealer to see what we need to do to fix this problem. It has been rebuilt and the kick down cable has been adjusted. Also, it has had a new sensor installed and a new throttle body installed. I will let you know what happens at this meeting today.

Message: I just had a new trans installed. Mine was slipping in the 2 to 3 shift. The shop was telling me that it is a very common problem with Dodge that typically gets worse in the cold winter, just as mine did. There is some shaft and seal inside that wears. When it is cold it metal shrinks adding to the problem. Best fix for me was to rebuild the trans.

Message: I have a 2003 V6 Dakota Quad Cab 4x4 with 7,500 miles on it. The second to third gear slip started within the first 1,000 miles. First trip to the dealer at 1,000 miles and the dealer said it was normal. The problem is getting worse as it sometimes won't shift to third at all and I've had to pull out of traffic. This morning it almost cost me my life as I went to pass and it would not shift and was stuck in between gears. Courtjester please let me know how your meeting went. Mine goes into the dealer tomorrow.

Message: I have a 93 4x4 with the 3.9, and I've had some problems with the tranmission. The biggest is when I hit the gas, sometimes it would rev a little and then clunk into gear. I also got a clunk when shifting between 1 and 2.
I replaced the TPS (throttle position sensor) on the throttle body, and it has helped. I have no more slipping when starting from a stop. My clunk in between 1st and 2nd is reduced.
I will be replacing more sensors in this tranny to see if it helps.
