Message: Have any of you altered you airboxes, by this I mean cutting the sides off to let more air in. I already have a K&N drop in and I see it useless to get a cone filter or store bought intake.

Message: All I Did is remove the elbo and remove the flap on the side of the raditator. Air comes thru the grill and into the air box. Thats all U need to do. I think cold air intakes are over rated. I've been a mechanic for 7 years, and that's just my opinion.

Message: Like I said, if you want more air, a functional ram air or cowl hood is the way to go. Cooler air as well. Pulling the elbo from the air box w/a K&N drop in and removing the flap does the same thing as a "cold" air intake w/ one exception the the " cold air intake also pulls the hot air off the exaust manifold, adding to the incoming air Temp. The "box" does not. You could have a 3" tube made to replace the ribbed hose from the "box" to the air hat. as far as the 3.9,5.2,and the 360 air box goes the only real restriction is the 90 degree elbo that is on the air box, and very slightly the ribbed hose. Now the 4.7 is another story because the "box" that attaches to the throttle body is a 90 degree elbo w/ various chambers in the box, as well as the rest of the mess. A "cone acttached directly to the throttle body is the cure for that, and has been proven on a dyno.( my cousin's truck )
Like I said I'm a educated mechanic and that is my opion , and I plan On proving My theory on the 3.9 on my buddy's dyno.(Don't have a truck w/a 5.2 or a 5.9 availble to me) I just haven't had the time and neither has he.

Message: I have to correct myself on one point I made. The K&N FIPK has a heat shield. Also I just want to point out that I did say that my theory has not been proven.

Message: 00DAK I removed the elbow pipe, cut the hole in the air box to except a 4" snorkel and added a 4" power saw sawdust flex pipe to it and ran it out beside my radiator. Kind of a ram air, but it does supply cool air from the grill. True ram air affect doesn't happen till you're up to quite a bit of speed.

Message: That's not a bad idea either. That is an old track trick. Guys whould get to the track and remove thier headlights and ran dryer hose to the air cleaner. Alot of people still use it. There is someone on this bord, not sure who, removed both flaps and ran hose up to a open element air cleaner.

Message: after you take out the elbo and remove the flap, complete the job with a pc of stovepipe or abs or aluminum sheet that you fabricated, to go from the box to the opening you uncovered when you removed the flap. that way the air pressure that builds up in the front of you truck is directed to the airbox instead of just blowing near it. Its a lot cheaper then a new hood and works just as well.

Message: I just removed the elbo tube thing. It seemed to help a little bit but not much. Should i make a tube that connects the air box to where the grill is ?? or just open that rubber piece up near the grill and let the air flow in that way. Also will drilling holes in the air box be affective.

Message: You know, I'll probably put the elbow back ON! It pulls cooler iar from the cowl at the bottom of the windshield, thru the fender well, to the elbow. Believe it or not, DC might have know what they were doing there.
I already have removed my air hat and accordian tube-now fernco 90, to a 7" piece of painter PVC going to the air box, that has a K&N drop in, with the elbow and rubber flap removed. But I think I'll be putting it back on, even the hose to the grill has to have the A/c lines there too, and it gets real hot.
NO-ONe asked the guy that started this post what kind of engine he has! I"m still not sure!

Message: i made my 'cool air intake' (god, what that stupid movie has done for aftermarket companies) out of 3" pvc, a fernco coupling, a TOILET FLANGE!!, a 6x9" k&n filter, and the factory airhat. not too tough...made a pretty noticeable difference, and was DEFINITELY cost effective...works for 5.9/5.2/3.9 and with some mods, a 4.7.
anyway, i drove in a godd@mned downpour for an hour last night with the rubber flappy dealy removed, and my "cool air intake" in place, slightly reduced throttle response, no other noticeable effects though...should be ok...just dont go puddle jumping with it.

Message: the stock air box has a hole in the bottom of it to allow water to escape, should you use it in your homemade intake, unless you go under rain should not be a problem.
