Message: I'm fairly certain the standard duty auto trans for first gens was the a500. You can check this by looking at the factory sticker (on the right corner under your hood) It should list a model. What haynes do you have? Mine has an application for adjusting the kickdown. If I sober up in time, I may post the entry. Best of luck.

Message: Yeah i had heard that the trans was the a500 but did not know for sure.
I have the haynes for 87-90?? i think. It talks about adjusting it but i am just not sure that i want to mess with it and take the chance to f- it up.
I called around today and got some prices on adjusting the kickdown and its only like 12 to 25 bucks so i might just get it done by a pro...
ANy suggustions????

Message: Hey, i looked under the hood and to my suprise its an A999 TorqueFlite auto. trans. With a lock up torque converter...
Is this a better/worse trans then the a500???
What about the torqueflite does that mean anything???
It talks about a 2.94 axle ratio and a 8.25 axle...
Whats the difference??????
Sorry if this all seems silly but i am just getting to know my dakota!
Thanks for any and all help!

Message: nbukrey,
the axle ratio is a direct relationship between your driveshaft and how many times the tire rotates around a 360 degree axis. For instance, yours is 2.94. This means that every time your wheel rotates one entire revolution, your drive shaft rotates 2.94 revolutions. The 8.25" is your actual axle. Chrysler made the 8.25 and the 8.75 for dakotas. I've also got the 8.25. This refers to your ring diameter. Ford has a 10 inch... sounds a little scary to me ;) Hope that helps clarrify that.
