Subject: Would you buy a used Dakota with 106K? IP: Logged
Message: I am thinking about buying my first Dakota...it is a 1997, ext cab, V6, 5 speed, 2 wheel dr, 106,000 miles...well taken care of, no rust, very clean, no noticable oil leaks of any significance...
A few questions...
Generally, what kind of miliage can I expect?
Does this engine have aluminum heads?
Does it have a timing chain or belt?
Are there any particular mechanical things I need to be aware of???
I expect it will need a new clutch, shocks and probably new ball joints, and rubber bushings...most of this I can do myself...
Before I buy it I will have my mechanic look it over real good, and do a test looking for cracked heads...
Thanx for the help

Message: I bought a '98 with 70,000 miles on it. I put 50,000 on in a year and was forced to sell it. I had alot of time put into it trying to customize it so i t didn't want to see it go. There was nothing wrong with it when I sold it and I didn't have to do anything to it while I drove it. I had a right inner tie rod that was going but that was it. I just picked up a '97 with 107,000 miles on it. The water pump went out on it after 4 days of owning it, but after I replaced that I have had no problems with it. Both of my Dakota's were V6's and got between 17 and 21 mpg.

Message: I wouldn't worry about the milage if its been taken care of. I have a 99 SLT 3.9 AX-15 5 speed with over 116,000 miles on it. I bought it with 3 miles and all i have replace on it was the water pump timing change and that was done at 114,000 and it wasn't in bad shape at all the water pump was still good but since i had to take it off i had it replaced. The truck still runs strong and gets great gas milage. I love my dak.

Message: I just stopped driving a 92 3.9 club cab with 199,000 miles that never had the heads off. I bought it with 126,000 miles on it in 99. I replaced water pump, fuel pump and radiator. (water pump and radiator were proactive, they hadn't gone out yet) The A518 auto tranny finally went out on it. Looked like about a $1500-$2000 replacement.
Rather than replace the tranny, I bought a 95 reposession I found with 120,000 miles for $3100. Doesn't burn a drop of oil and gets 21mpg. It's a 5 speed. I think the 3.9 outlasts a 318(5.2).
