Message: Hey guys,
Over the past couple of months I have noticed something in my 2001 3.9 V6 Dakota SLT Club Cab 4x4. When I am sitting at a stop light in Drive, I hear this rattling that seems to be coming from the engine or tranny. When I put it in Park, Reverse, or Neutral, the sound goes away. Sounds like something in the tranny to me. Let me know what you guys think, I will probably end up taking it in and having the dealer look at it while it is still under warranty. Thanks.

Message: i dont know what wrong with your truck but on the subject of noises, my 2000 V6 4x4 CC Sport makes some sort of odd rattling/scrathing noise when I hit the break. anyone know what that is? I think it might have to do with that clockspring recall or something may have something to do with the steering column. I dunno.
BTW your truck is pretty similar to mine. what kind of 0-60 or 1/4 times do u get and hows your milage???

Message: I am getting about 16-17 mpg in my truck. I have an ARE tonneau but I haven't really seen a diff. yet in gas mileage. Never timed my 0-60 so I wouldn't know what to tell ya, I do like to keep my truck out of overdrive when I am getting on the interstate as it has a tendency to want to shift too early and sometimes it ain't quite up to speed yet.

P.S. If anyone knows what's wrong with my truck from the original post I would love to hear it!

Message: BIll I had the same noise on my 2000 CC. Turned out to be a bad catalytic converter. Took it back to the dealer and they replaced it free of charge. A good way to test is to hit the converter when cold. If you hear the rattle, get it replaced.

Message: Steve,
Thanks for the info. Surprised to hear that it is the cat converter with the sound being when I am only in Drive, but if you had the same problem, hopefully that will do it. I will get an appt. at the dealer shortly. Thanks again.

Message: Check the Timing Chain. I replaced mine twice
before I found out Dodge has a TSB on the timing
chain, they add a tensioner to stop the rattle. I
hope they had that fixed that by 2001, but I have
been very disappointed in Dodge lately.

Message: I finally got home and was able to give my truck a look. Unfortunately, it wasn't the simple solution of pushing the tranny dipstick in all the way. Still rattling, so I will make an appointment for the service shop this week. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
