Subject: Roller Rockers Fo Mi V-6 IP: Logged
Message: Hey i just got done looking at the KRC website and found the 1.7 roller rockers for my v-6 for like $299. I was wondering if this was the cheepest place to find these things or is there a better and cheeper place to look? And another thing i would like to know, are Roller rockers worth the money? and is putting them in "doable" by a amature machanic or dose it have to be done by a shop? One final thing, has anyone used there camshaft, and if so what do you think abou it? Thanx in advance ya'll

1.6 ratio is whats stock in your V-6..

Message: should talk to Sam on some roller rockers
he will help u on the install to the end and he also has great prices.
if u can change ur sparkplugs u can probable change roller rockers
heck i did it got it right first try and it was my first time doing anything like it the hardest part about the install process is getting the valve covers off (u have to modify stock valve covers to fit or u can order those also from Sam)
ok good reasons to stay away from aluminum roller rockers:
u know what stress life is right?
Steel: has what is called an infinite stress life meaning it doesnt get weaker when force is applied to it
Aluminum: doesnt have an infinite stress life it gets weaker over time as stress is applied to it
Example lets say a piecs of aluminum can handle 1000 lbs but we continue to apply 500 lbs to it after a period (cant remember hours) of times it will break thats y planes are chopped up after a while of use is due to those reasons
ok enough of my metal talk and to steer u away from aluminum stick with steel and u will be fine for a long time
here is the website from the guy i bought from Theservice i got from him was so good i dont even hesitate to to refer people to him
http://www.socaldakota.com/default.asp
if ur going for performance get the 1.7s but to keep stock go for the 1.6s

I have installed probably around 35 or more sets
in the V6 and 8 there are a few out there I have
installed that have over 100,000 miles with
absolutly no probs
They also add about 18 HP at the rear wheels on
the V6

Message: Larry, I been toss'in the idea around of adding the 1.7 Roller Rockers to my 92 5.2 4x4. Would it be a good idea to get a 3-way valve job and stiffer springs? I plan on keeping this truck a while, I think my next project will be to replace the timing gears and chain with a heavy duty set and replace the water pump as well. I was wonder if i going into this far I might as well pull the heads have the 3 angle valve job done on the heads after porting and polishing them. Some of this goes beyond my level of expertise. I have replaced water pumps, timing gears and head gaskets. Since you got the experience and expertise, I thought I would get ypur thoughts on the matter.

Message: I replaced my stock rockers since i had some come loose and start making a lot of racket(at 10,000 miles who would have thought)
Do the the RRs last longer then the stock rockers? (from the sound of ur post larry they sounded like they didnt)
since i plan to have my RRs in for awhile what should i watch for to know when something needs to be looked over or readjusted? (other then the taping sound)
Thanks and Sorry for the long post's

Message: You don't need to change anything to use the 1.7's
And how did my post in any way say they do not
last as long.
I have a few trucks with over 100,000 on the
rockers with no probs.
How do you get they don't last as long out of that
If anything they would last longer because the
have less friction and heat than stockers

Message: I heard or rather was told in order to switch to the 1.7 roller rockers that you would have to tear out the oil baffles or they would hit the valve covers and you would have to switch the valve springs out for stiffer springs... Is this true???
Thanks in advance,
Greg

Message: To run the 1.7s, you'll need to knock in the baffles to clear the tops of the studs/adjusters.
I offer modified valve covers w/new welded in low profile baffles, + powder coated in a variety of colors for $100 + ship + your old covers (simply install and adjust your rocker arms, then put these on-- and then send me your old ones.)
Here's some examples-- http://www.socaldakota.com/powdercoating/

Message: Well what about the valve springs... Will the old or rather stock ones work... I currently have right at 80,000 miles on it while using 0-30 Mobil 1 in it since 60,000 "that's when I bought the truck last fall"... I just ran Auto Rx through the engine and finished up the final treatment before the last oil change... That alone helped more than you can imagine for making it run quiter and smoother... BUT back to subject will I have to switch to stiffer springs... If I shave .015" off of the heads will the 1.7's cause my valves to hit my pistons???
Thanks Again,
Greg

Message: No and No
The stock springs will work just fine they will
handle a .500 lift befor binding or come close
to the pistons
The lift on a stock cam is .432 and the 1.7's add
aprox .030 so you are a long way from any spring
binding or having the valves hit the pistons.
Stock Springs Work Great with the 1.7's
I looked up the records and have installed 38 sets
of crower 1.7's over the last 3 1/2 years if I
include the ones on my V6 39 sets.
You do need to knock the baffles back just lay the
covers on the floor and use a 2X4 and knock them
down just be sure you leave the ends open about
1/8 inch so the PCV, vent and the oil will go in.
Or get a set from Sam all ready to bolt on
I have also done this to all I installed except
the V8's that went to differant covers.
Its a great mod, takes between 2 to 4 hours, sam
has instructions on his site or me or a lot of
others could explain it on the board if you have
even a little mech ability you can do it yourself

Message: Ok, so far I've got .477 with .023 clearance left... That's .030 for the 1.7's + .015 head shave + .432 stock cam = .477... So my next question is how much lift or clearance would I still have left if I also switched out my cam for the billet alluminum performance cam from fastdodge.com... I'm assuming if I went that far I would have to switch everything right... I seriously doubt I will, but maybe in not too near future, if I keep the truck that long...
Thanks Again,
Greg

Message: Are the rocker shafts for a sb v8 mopar the same diameter as the 3.9l... I was wondering this because I found some roller rockers 1.7's for a 360 and other small blocks that are suppost to work with stock shafts "allthough I'm sure they'll wear out in the next 50 or so thousand miles", their a little cheaper and I really can't justify the $300 right now... I'm assuming that they are the same diameter and should work simply because it is old bassic tech and I know mopar wouldn't change diameter for just that, but don't won't to spend the money if they won't work...
Or if possible somewhere with the exact 3.9l specs and v8 specs...
Thanks Again,
Greg

Message: No your completely right, I'm just an idiot and have no idea what I was talking about... Yes your right they are stud lock rockers... I just got through checking... So the same ones's will fit the newer V8's... Now all I've got to do is recheck everything again... Maybe I should just do it right and buy the one's for the 3.9l... Yeh I know !duhhhhh! Well you live and learn...
Thanks,

Message: Hmm im not sure on the amc 360 i just opened one up today they look like they would fit but then again i would talk to Sam or crower to be sure
but from the looks of it the 1.7s wont work on an amc 360 not enough push rod clearance (unless u want to grind away at it)
The 3.9 has the same RRs as the 5.2 5.9 viper v10 and ram v10 (just remember 1.6s are stock and 1.7s are for performance)
ill be trying to talk to sam today cause im gonna see if i can get RRs for an amc 360 jeep
BTW
this is from what happened to me on the RRs after i installed them and ran them for a bit (this would also help anyone who has an agressive cam)
I noticed i had no power at take offs and an occasional ping when i put my foot to the floor
i fixed both the ping and no power from take off by relocating vacuum line from TB vacuum to intake manifold vacuum this does 2 things that im aware of: it provides a higher vacuum (the higher vacuum makes up for the lowered vacuum caused from an aggressive cam or some RR intallations )and drops vacuum more quickly when u give it the gas (when the vacuum drops it retards timing preventing or lowering ping at take off)

part number for the amc 360 jeep, crower roller rockers

(studs are not included)
http://www.crower.com
Sam said u can get 1.7s for the amc 360 but machining has to be done to give proper rod clearance
this is Sams site if u want to contact him or look around http://www.socaldakota.com
