Hasn't the 5.2/4.7 V-8's been optional in 4wd Dakota's for a long time now???

Message: Steven... sorry you can't do the swap. There is a lot that you can do to that pre-mag 3.9 though. The only downside to hopping it up is that it's really hard to come across the parts, being that most of them are discontinued.
spitfire9137 is right with engine compartment problem.
John RT/SE... They didn't offer the V8 4x4 until the genII's. Yes the 5.2 (318) is old as dirt, just wasn't availible for the start of the dakota 4x4's. The 4.7's are only a couple years old though.

Message: Thanks for the info MoparDude340! I'm new to the Dakota scene- still trying to learn about the diffences, similarities, etc...
Good choice with putting the 340 in the Dakota!! My 71 Road Runner is a 340/auto car; I have a 340 block for it, but with all the trouble I've been having trying to find a decent, affordable forged crank, I am just about ready to order a 4" stroker crank.
Not that the extra torque would hurt either in my big a$$ B-body car...

Message: Thanks John. The 340 came from my '73 Charger Rallye. I ran through the build sheet and all and the damn thing is 1 of 43. (maybe less if I sat down and narrowed it down to color, it having both mirrors.... you get the idea.) After I got the car, I ran all the numbers and the motor didn't match up. It is a 340, just not the one that was put in the car. Turns out, the original owner blew the motor up and had the dealer replace it back in '78. Being the tank that old school small block mopars are, I don't know how in the world he managed to blow it. Must of beat the hell out of it, followed by completely 0 maintence. Some people. Anyways, since it wasn't the right motor, I decided to yank it out and put it in that '88. I got a 383 I'm about to tear down to put in the Charger. I hear you about B-Bodies being so heavy. Hopfully I can get this 5400 lb Charger down into the high 10's or so.
88 SC DAK... The engine compartment on the genI's is too shallow. That's why a v8 won't fit with a 4x4. You could, but you need to make your own motor mounts. Get a costum hood, or use none at all, since the motor will be sitting to high for the stock hood. Angle your rears up to compensate. Cut and remold the floor for the tranny and transfer case. Get costum made CV driveshafts so you won't be braking universal joints every week. etc. etc... You get the idea.

Message: James... engine-swaps.com only make the brackets for the 2wd's due to the room in the engine compartment. They didn't have anything for the 4wd when got my stuff from them for my '88. A buddy of mine was going to do the conversion on his 4wd. Unless they have a kit (I don't know how) now for the 4wd's that aren't listed on the site. Anyways, there are always ways to do whatever you have in your head to do. It's just a matter of time, money, and fabrication. Must of the wild autos out there are custom fabbed anyways.
Steven... good luck, and I hope you can figure out a way to pull it off.

Message: Hey Mopardude, I have a question for you. You seem to know your daks so I was wondering if you could help me out. I have a 93 4wd that I was thinking about putting a V8 in and was dissapointed to see your information. My dak has magnum on the air cleaner cover but I'm not sure it is. What's the best way to tell? It has throttle body injection but someone told me that the magnum was multiport, is that correct?
I would really like to wake it up but not sure what all I should do. Thanks for your time.

Message: mopardude thats bull. not to rain on your intelect but ive talked to a lot of people who have put 318's in gen 1 daks with a lot less mods than you say needs to be done. the 318 block is almost the same as a 3.9, its just longer and that requires you to use an electric pusher fan like carol shelby used on the gen 1 shelby daks. all the people that i talked to used the same motor mounts, cause again the blocks are a lot alike. the biggest hurdle ive heard is the oil pan, most people either mod'd it themselves, or had a shop do it. what about gen 2's with v8's, they have virtualy the same front end as we do and that v8 sits under that hood just fine.
didnt mean to break down your ego, just wanted to lift the spirits of my fellow dak owners who want to swap the engines. later

Message: Brent: the 318 IS a 3.9L. It's just missing the rear two cylinders. Aside from that, width and height are both the exact same. I'm not sure about the mounts though. Like Mopardude says, everything is a possibility, just a matter of time, money, friends, and alcohol consumption. If a v8 is really all that important for you guys, stop your crying, slap your sticks in 2x4, cut out your front driveshafts, and drop a 440 until your heart sings. I still don't know about you 4x4 guys.... little flakey if you ask me.

Message: Hey FOX. U think 4x4 guys are flakey? Well you really have never gone off road ( Off the beaten Path, Try something New ) and thats sad. I bet your the type who like racing in a straight line. Try 4x4 some time and u might enjoy being vertical.

Message: Steve, I actually used to 4x4 quite frequently back when I was a resident in Arizona. 89 GMC Custom Sierra 8.5" inch lift and 35s. I did enjoy it, there is no doubt about that. But to me, and I'm sure to some other people, having my vehicle thrown about only snap a driveshaft (as i've done), pop a spring perch, or crack an axle isn't the thrill I'm looking for. To set the record straight, yes, I do race in a straight line. I like speed, I like fast. Its the innate feeling of the world behind you. And if seventh grade math serves me correct, the shortest and fastest route between two points is a straight line. (not a mudfield or a road coarse).

and there are very minor differences in the gen1/gen2 front ends
same axle, same locations ect
if you can get a lift kit for gen2 to fit a gen1 with a little owrk i think a v-8 can go in there as well
it HAS been done

i WISH i did
dreaming=me owning a 440 six pack or even a Hemi, doubt that would happen unless i got a SuperBee bodya nd stuck a new 426 in it, but if i were to do that why nit jsut go for the full 528 hemi and s/c it?
i would love even a 383 auto (lowest on list but hey, id still take it)
and i know a 318 will go into a genI, if you can pull one out of a 92+ with tranny it woul dbe ideal
not sure if the transfer case would take it, ill have to look around, or maybe walt or somone with a good knowlege can chime in
this is me jsut thinking, nothing serious planned
i would liek to have a motor and tranny and everything lined up to go if my motor dies and i actualy go through with it, so my truck would have a minimal down time
oh well
