in your opion, would a turbo be a better way to go than installing a supercharger?

Joe,

nobody makes a "kit" for the 3.9 V6.... or not yet anyways. There are places that will do custom jobs but your truck will be under a lot of down time. Speedtweaks is one of those places and can make it as badass as you want it.

"in your opion, would a turbo be a better way to go than installing a supercharger?"

i know that this wasnt suppose to be my opinion but if you mean just installing than the supercharger would be the better way to go... a lot easier and a lot less expensive. The downfall on the turbo is the price but it can make more power, sooner, and for longer. I have had a powerdyne supercharger on my truck and wasnt really impressed with it at all (guess the 100 shot of nitrous got me too excited). Right now i am working on turbocharging my V6 and will post results later.

here is what i have done/using:

TB0301 Garret turbo
24 lb injectors
aftermarket throttle body (not sure which one yet)
custom built manifold, y-pipe, and downpipe
turbonetics throttle body hat
bosch BOV
aeroquip stainless oil line
and other goodies

all my parts are used/rebuilt except for the stainless lines so i am going as cheap as possible

i will get pics up later (yes i finally have pics). i had a thread about it but nobody seemed interested in it

Greg. No the other one.

What are you using for a fuel system? The 24# injectors are a start, but what fuel pump and FMU or are you going with the FAST system? Or Split Second?

nothing until i turn up the boost.... i am either gonna get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator (that adjusts to boost) or a holley 275 lph fuel pump. That fuel pump alone could support the fuel system.... i just dont know what i wanna get yet... remember i am not gonna run the boost that high.

greg,
i have pics of some of it... will post sortly

yeah... the stock wastegate is set at 7.5 psi but i am gonna bleed it a little to knock it down to 5-6.. when the intercooler and pump come along.. i will raise it to 10 psi... nothing more, i dont wanna change out my head gaskets yet;-)

well i tried to post the pics and looks like the html is turned off or something... here are some links:

Uh, wow. Guess you get pretty aggressive on the whole "move things out of the way so I can work in here" approach.... hahahaha

Now, isn't that discharge tube gonna be routed pretty close to the fender lip? Will the hood still close all the way?

I hear you on the low boost. So you're sure that the 5-7 psi won't really need anything more than 24# injectors? I kinda thought you'd at least need an FMU and a pump. Maybe not.

i'll figure all the fuel issure out when i start it up... i bougth some gauges to help. I dont plan on driving it more than neccessary when i first get it going and absolutely no racing until bigger pump comes along.

yeah that discharge is gonna get pretty close but that's okay... i am not gonna have inner fender wells

hood closes fine.... tranny dipstick is the highest point under the hood. Pretty easy to check when you have the fender off. Both fenders use to be off.... that was pretty exciting.

I am gonna get a gts hood and the turbo is gonna breath right through the hole on the hood... i am gonna build a little air box that sits under it.... pretty sweet.

I hear you Mister Weight Reduction. No fender liners. That thing's gonna be a feather-weight when you're done.

It's sure gonna be hard to not race once you get the feeling of that boost, so you better start saving for that pump! ahhahahaha

Not that you havent' already driven a 6psi set-up (the Powerdyne), but you know what I'm sayin....

If I had known back in 2000 what i've learned in the past year from Duner, I'd have never gotten rid of my old Gen II Club Cab 6. It was lowered and ready to roll. I would've just built a beefy 6 motor and then boosted the piss out of it. It could already handle really tight (all poly-urethane suspension lowered 2/3) and it was making power with economy.... but a turbo set-up wouldve been schweet. With a Tremec to back it up and an 8-3/4" rear.....

Hmmm.... maybe that's a project to plan out. Heh.

Hooo boy (as he pats his wallet).....

Actually, i just remembered. My old hooptie is the truck of the day on DragTruk. Heh.

Hey Greg i think that is an awesome set up, but where or how did you make those pipes? Like the one leading to the intake's air hat that looks like it may be a upper intercooler pipe. I would like to scheeme up some sort of homeade turbokit for my CC 3.6...but the automatic is the bigest down fall that i see. Do you have to do any computer work to your ECM or your PCM? Is the truck going to ignore the fact that your Intake Manifold Absolute Pressure is going to be about double than what it is used to? I have no idea about how the stock computer would act to such fabrication to the way the engine runs. Damn if i knew that i was gunna end up wanting to do a turbo kit on my truck i would've never sold my turbo off of my old '91 GST Eclipse "14B mitsu"
Thanks for any advise ahead of time.

Hey Greg, great job on the Fab, let us know what she run's like. I got a couple of questions for you, first being why didn't you like the powerdyne supercharger, and what do you think the main difference in boost is going to be, seeing how they boy are running around 6 psi? Second what is a FMU? I read about them on other sites, and I have no clue what it is. Last but not least, What did you do with the powerdyne Super Charger? Thanx again for all of your help

Greg555,
i dont have an exact number but i imagine somewhere in the 300hp (at the crank) with no intercooler and 5-6 psi.... but thats including other mods.

gooberlog,
all the pipes are just exhaust pipe. I bought mandrel bend pieces and did some welding and cutting... i will be running an intercooler after i can afford one.

dakbuilder,
there is a HUGE difference between s/c and turbos. The main one being that the s/c runs off of a belt so its limited to the rpm that the motor spins and can only produce full boost at peak rpms... which isnt that long with an auto. The turbo spins off of exhaust gas so it spins faster and produces boost a whole lot sooner. S/C run a max of 60,000 rpms and a turbocharger runs around 150,000 rpms... get the picture (thats also why s/c have a bigger compressor). The FMU is a fuel management unit.... used in conjuction with another inline fuel pump... it uses manifold pressure to add fuel to the system. The problem with it is the between flooring it and idle... it makes our trucks backfire and act crazy... so there are better solutions.

i guess the main reason i didnt like it is because it took forever to spool up and didnt help as much as i hope.

another thing... that powerdyne was probably only putting 4-5# of boost into my motor.. and the turbo will be adjusted to produce more if neccessary.

Thanx Greg, I had no idea about how the turbo worked. Most of the stuff about the S/C I already new. But that sounds cool as hell. I hope you get everything to work right. ALso will you be having a problem with turbo lag, or not. Oh and thanx again for the clearification on the FMU. That helps out a lot.

its a pretty small turbo so there should be no turbo lag. When most people talk about turbo lag they make is sound like it last for an eternity but it is no more than a second (except 18 wheelers, huge turbos!)

my turbo is a TB0301 off of a buick regal. compressor is .42 a/r and turbine is .82 a/r... really not big enough to produce awesome numbers but i got it for $100. I talked to turbonetics and he told me to scrap it and sell it on ebay and i asked him why... he said all i would be able to get out of it with my engine combo is 9-10 pounds of boost... i told him that was more than enough! like i said, i am not looking to replace my shortblock just quite yet... if i have to work on the bottom end it will be replaced with 8 cylinders.... i was hoping the nitrous woulda spead up that process but i guess it didnt.
