Subject: It just doesn't start? IP: Logged
Message: I own a '99 V6 Dakota, and the truck was running just fine on Sunday, and I tried to start it Monday morning it cranked and started and died. So I tried it again.. crank, started and I gave it some gas and revved it up, let off the gas and died. Now it just cranks!
I've had the truck for two years extended warranty just ran out. If any one has suggestions on the problem please let me know. I plan on taking it to a mechanic on Friday but would like to have a heads up on the possible problem.

Message: Take the cap off of the fuel test port on the fuel rail and push on the needle valve while someone cranks it. You should get good presure and a copious amount of gas coming out. If not the fuel pump or filter is Kaput.

Message: old mechanics trick: first thing you do ---
spray starting fluid into intake, if it trys to start it's a fuel delivery problem, if it doesn't try to start it's a electrical no spark problem. only other thing is compression but that's a long shot.
fuel + spark + compression = running

Message: using starting fluid is a lot safer than having raw gas squirting out on a cranking engine

Message: Does all your electronics restart as if you disconnected the battery, while you are cranking? If so I had the same problem in my 99 rc dak.
The dealership thought it was my alternator. It ended up being my fuel pump. Also I had to replace the battery.

Message: Thanks for all the advice! I had the truck towed to my mechanic. If it turns out to be the fuel pump I plan on replacing it this weekend to save the cost of labor. As long is no special tools are needed? I'll ask my mechanic.
