Subject: Changing oil in my 98 dakota IP: Logged
Message: I bought my dakota a lil while back and it's due for an oil change now... the dealer ripped me off and didn't give me the owners manual for it. Until I can get an owners manual I guess I'm gonna ask you all my questions:) I'm pretty new to working on vehicles, but I would like to get into changing my own oil. My grandpa's willing to show me how, but we sorta need to know how much oil it takes to fill the truck up since I guess most vehicles are different. So can one of you tell me? Thanks,
Josh (GB2000)

Message: Should be 4 1/2 quarts for the V6 with filter. Don't add the extra 1/2 quart. Save it for another day.

Message: 4-1/2 quarts is the correct amount of oil, and, as Deep Purple suggests, DON'T add that extra 1/2 quart!
Keep that baby purring, and good luck!

Message: Like one of the other guys suggested, do yourself a huge favor and buy the Haynes manual, it is well worth the money and you'll learn a lot from it as well as saving yourself a lot of grief.

Message: It says 3.5quarts in my owner’s manual. With filter 4 qts is probably pretty close. I dripped mine fairly dry and I still have a little of the 4th quart of 5w-30 amsoil that I decided to use for the cold No Dak temps. Depends on what capacity filter you also are using.
You would think they would not have gone proportionate with the oil pan in the "25 %" size drop. Only make sense they would have placed a larger pan on. Oh well, I guess I can wish that most of the 3.9's I hear wouldn’t rattle.
Great site. And yes, I do like my truck. Mopar or no car.
