I have a 92 Dakota with 3.9 L V-6 and auto trans. After driving about 1.5 hours it starts to cut out and backfire. Until then it runs fine. If I let off on the gas for a second or two and step down on it, it will be Ok for awhile then start acting up again. I've changed out the O2 sensor and the fuel filter but no help. I've had it put on a diagnostic machine and nothing shows up. One night I was driving it and it was raining and about 40F and it started acting up again, cutting out and back firing. Any ideas what's wrong?

Thanks,

Cal

Dude, it's 10 years old, it's going to do -some- funny stuff... I imagine it has a load of miles on it, yes?

Check the normals first. Pull off the cap/rotor and see how badly burned that is, if your plug-wires are older, replace them, check the plug while your at it to. They -should- be a light tan, if they are white it's running too hot, if they are black an oily you've got an oil leak. Although that doesn't sound like your problem to me.

'92 would be what, carburated? Either way, run some carb/fuel injector cleaner through your next tank of gas. You may also want to try climbing underneath and tapping on the catyletic convertor, if it rattles a lot, it's breaking up and needs replacing.

I would agree with toddw it sounds to me like your cat,Same thing was happening to my 90 by the time I figured it out I needed a muffler too(One backfire was real bad and caused the muffler to explode)

Thanks for the tip. I'll check out the cap/rotor and wires.
