Subject: 91 V6 Dies without warning IP: Logged
Message: I have a 91, V6, 3.9L, 60000 miles that will die without warning. When the problem started, the engine would start without any problem and then would instantly stop running after 5 to 10 minutes. The truck would start without any problems after sitting for a minute. Now the truck has a hard time starting. Seams like it is'nt getting gas and/or spark.
I think it is the SMEC and here is why. When the truck is starting and running normaly the Check Engine light is on all the time. When the truck stops running or will not crank, the Check Engine light is not on (Note the dash lights and radio are working find and not loosing power).
Anybody have this problem or know of a fix? Know where I can find a SMEC replacement if needed?

Message: Had this trouble on my '88 4x4. Drove me and the Mopar garage guys nuts for a couple of days. The only code the computer would give was a failed start message. Of course it acted fine when they drove her. Finally it died when the scanner was hooked up (we were about to give op for the 3rd time). Turned out to be the reluctor in the distributor. It had spark but the TBI didn't know it was time to squirt. Been fine for over 75Kmi now. It was a cheap fix, just a bugger to find. Best of luck!

Message: I have an '89 Dodge Dakota that began to cut off without warning, just like the ignition switch would be turned off. At first, it would start up again, but the condition deteriorated so that now it is difficult to start and it runs for only a short time before dying. I changed the fuel line filter and the coil (because they were inexpensive and easy to change). I have ordered a new SMEC from mail order, but also suspect the distributor pickup. I am not a mechanic, nor do I understand "modern" engine electronics. Can anyone help me out? The truck is stranded in my driveway. Thanks very much. Ed.

Message: Had this problem with my 88. Replaced whole dist. which came with new pick up (dealer's don't $96. dist, pick up $34.). Around 89. at Advanced Auto matching AZ price. The shaft in my old dist. had a small amount of play in it besides the pickup being really sloppy, so replaced all.
Also, replaced 02 which can cause the stalling.
You can disconect the o2 and take it for a drive to check if it makes a differance.
No more of above problem afterwards and ran better than before.
Hope this helps.
