Subject: 3.9l V-6 knocking sound?? IP: Logged
Message: I've got a 95 with the 3.9L V-6, with 128,000 miles on it, and its been fine up until a few weeks ago, when I started noticing this knock. It is most prevalent when I first start the truck, at idle, and when ever I give it gas to accelerate, it sounds almost as if something metallic is bouncing around inside the engine. When the RPM's get higher though, it goes away. But as I let off the gas, lets say to 1/4 throttle or so, it comes back. Anyone else experience this, or have any ideas what it could be? Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks.

Message: If you still have good oil pressure, with that many miles, could be timing chain slap. A rod probably won't get quieter; a main will be a hard knocking. If it sounds more toward the back of the motor, check the converter bolts.

Message: pinging sounds like thumbtacks being stabbed in a tin can. sounds like you got pinging. try a low temp thermostat, colder plugs, high octane gas

Message: Prolly the timing chain. Mopar has a new tensioner assy that cures the problem. You also might check the Cat. convertor to see if the guts are coming lose. When the vehicle is cold, lay under the vehicle and take your hand and bang on the converter. If it sounds like it is full of rocks it is coming apart and needs replaced. This could be your rattle.

Message: This is a Gen II, right? I'm thinking you may have a hydraulic lifter, or two, that has lost it's prime. The only question I have is does the Gen II use a hydraulic lifter system? I think it does. My '97 did this to me once. I had just changed the oil and a couple days later I started it up and one of the lifters was rattling like crazy. I got the vehicle up to operating temperature, dumped approximately 1/2 quart of Mercon IV transmission oil into the engine oil to use as a detergent and the problem went away. I'm guessing I had a blockage in one of the oil gallery passages. I ended up leaving the trans oil in for about 200 to 250 miles then changed the engine oil again. For those of you who are scratching their head and wondering if I'm crazy for dumping trans oil in my engine oil, please note: transmission oil contains a natural detergent. It will clean out the oil passages to keep your engine happy and running smoothly. Don't leave it in for more than 200 to 300 miles though. It is best done when you are close to an oil change. Also, make sure that the engine is up to the operating temperature before adding the trans oil. It helps it circulate to clean out the "gunk" in your passages. I have used Valvoline 10W-30 and 5W-30 ever since I bought the truck and it has served me well. I think some debris just got into the oil somehow. Whatever the case I hope this sheds a little light on your problem. Without actually hearing it I can't be for certain.

| 02 dak knocking when i turn IP: Logged
Message: my 2002 dodge dakota started to knock when put in 4x4 and only on turns, but recently it has started making a knocking sound going on straight roads, i changed out all 4 ball joints, but still have the noise coming from the wheels, could it be my cv joints? or is it something with the steering or even the transmission? any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Message: Definitely sounds like the CV joints. Have youo visually inspected them? Are the rubber boots torn?

Message: yes, i took them off and everything from the boots to the inner workings of them are good, i finally gave in and took it to a mechanic and he said the same thing, but after checking the cv´s and seeing that they were good, he said the only other thing could be my transfer case, does that make a knocking noise when that tensioner inside of the transfer case loosens up? i may still go ahead and buy new cv axles just to change the old ones out...but i m lost on this one, and have no clue what it could be

Sorry but personally I skipped the ESP 101 course.
You need to get a fuel gauge on the schrader valve.
