Message: I have a 2000 V6 Dak and for some odd reason I cant get better than 14 mpg in the city and 19-20 on the highway. In the city I went easy one it and it went up to about a small margen. I read yesterday that someone replaced their O2 senser and their gas milage went up. My truck shows no trouble codes so thats why I'm iffy about it. Any iput would be much appreaciated

Message: Is it an automatic or a stick? Do you suffer from Leadfootitus? Is this the gas milage it's always gotten? What fuel octane rating are you using?
Here's some tips...
Run some fuel injector cleaner through it.
New plugs if the old ones look worn.
New Cap/Rotor (The brass type)
A cold air intake couldn't hurt (better flow)
Keep your foot out of it! (Leadfootitus is an epidimic here...)

Message: Regular consumable tuneups has helped me maintain my 2000 V6. I off road regularly and that is when I demand more power from my engine.
I change Plugs cap and rotor every 10-15 k miles. I think the cap and rotor are a key to regular maintance and good mileage.
I get about 16-17 mpg's consitantly except when I go off road. I think my engine right now is running at its best ever. I put in the 3923's and Champion 8 mm wires and new cap and rotor and I noticed a good difference and I seem to be getting more miles per gallon but I have only run 2 tanks since this recent change. I get about 330-340 per tank but fill up at about 320 miles, 22 gallon tank. Mixed with Highway and City driving.
Pull your cap and look if you have not change it or had it changed in a few months. It will probably show signs of needing to be replaced.

But there is this pressing issue on a shiney black Fender Stratacastor that I am very intent on getting.

Message: Every single motor for the Dakotas seem to like gas but so does every truck. The one way to get gasmilage is to either get one with a 4 banger, which is sac-religous or just do some small gas saving mods like intake, exhaust, and and a power pully. But otherwise we are all screwed in the back pocket. But it is a very fun truck to own. And the chicks dig the Dodge

The best mpg I can get is 13mpg w/ 75%/25% city and highway. The best I have even gottwen to a tank was 230 miles. and it has been slowly decreasing for over a year. Now I get about 200mi a tank....
I have about 10K miles on my truck now and I think it sucks gas badd.... but I still need to keep my warranty (damn 7yr/100,000mi) so do u think New Spark Plugs would help?? I'm really intrested in getting the AutoLites 3923's.

This last tank I decided to try the 90 octane stuff. You know, I think that I might be getting better mileage with the 90 octane vs. the 93 octane! I guess we'll see when I fill up next time.

Hight(4x4 or 4x2), weight, tempature, elavation,Air densaty, ect. People that say that the V8's get better gas mileage are in fact incorrect. My Cousin/roomate had a 2000 CC 4x4 w/ a 4.7L. It NEVER got any better than mid 11's. and that is mostly highway.

Message: Dakotaman,
I would check or just change the cap and rotor. Changing to the 3923's will help, it did for me.
Also the 8mm wires helped.
John RT/SE,
I thought the recommended octane was no higher than 87 for our Dakota's.
You should use good clean burning gas and stay away from the lowest priced stations. I have been told that Chevron is about the cleanest burning gas and best for your injectors.
Rip away!

Message: I'm with MightDakSXT... I get about 17-18MPG City. I used to get probally around 14-15 before Mods, because 17-18 was what I got highway (wasn't a lot of city driving then). I know on the highway I'll get 22-23 MPG, so I'm pretty happy. My truck gets the same milage my 1996 Cavalier 2-door got and it gets about the same as my parent's 2002 Subaru Outback. So I'm pretty happy with it.
Of course, to -get- that milage I have to run 93 octane (Darned Jet II). Anything less than 89 and it starts to get really boggy.

Message: My '93 ext cab 4X4 is in the 19-20 highway range, and about the low teens city. There are too many hills here in Western PA to expect much more than that. I replaced the plugs, cap and rotor. Funny thing was that the tip of the rotor was loose, and causing erratic timing. This caused a rough, cammy idle, and an aggressive exhaust note. It runs best on at least 89 octane gas, either Sunoco, Amoco, or Exxon. I've replaced my muffler and tailpipe twice in three years, and found out that the parts are the same for the Dak, either 6 or V8. Being an old fart, I stick with an old axiom which has never failed me over the last 30 years: Use premium fuel when extended highway driving is in order. I've switched to synthetic oil, and still have 40 psi at idle, and 60 psi at 2000 rpm. Life is good...

I noticed that the engine is more sensitive to outside temp changes with the 180 thermo than the 195. Cold weather effects mpg more with the 180, but it's due for a tune-up.

Just don't let my wife hear that!
Seriously, I just changed out the VERY worn-out original Champion plugs and wires (48K miles), switched to a 180 degree thermostat, and cleaned & re-oiled the K&N drop-in in my truck. The mileage so far seems to be better.
I'll let you know after a couple of tanks.

Message: A friend of a friend told me when he had a '99 Dak with 3.9L he noticed that the mileage would drop off over time, especially if he was doing a lot of highway or low stress miles on the rig. He says that when he put a good load on it, ie. pulling a trailer or a 1000lb. load in the back that the mileage returned to normal after the load was removed. He swears that the ECM learns bad mileage under regular load and gets better when pulling heavy for a while.
The only thing I can think of is that the O2 sensors get fouled under light load and the deposits tend to burn off when the exhaust temperature gets high enough. Shifting patterns may also be involved with the auto trans under load.
Seems to work for my '99 4X4, I get nearly a 20% increase in mileage (combined city/highway) after a good work out for the engine. I hook up my trailer with a coupla' quads on it and drive to the nearest river valley and go up and down each side once. I get the benefit of going for a quad ride in my favorite area as well as increased mileage for the next month. Hope it works for you, just don't ask me WHY it works.

Message: I have a 98 V6 and in my opinion I don't get good gas mileage, but the Chevy I traded off got worse, was uncomfortable to ride in, and cost an arm and leg to keep running. For all it's faults the Dakota is a better truck for the money. My mileage is also affected by a heavy right shoe and one large hill to get to work. I get about 14 in town and about 20 on the highway. My PT Cruiser does about 20 as well and it's a 4 banger.
