I keep reading this Rotor & Cap & plugs ... thats all good info, but don't forget the obvious; Tire Pressure, the #2 factor in Milage in my opinion.

will dual exhaust system help milage. if so true dual or split at the pipes. i have 2000 4x4 extended cab. what about computer chips.

true duals kill the low end hp & trq. in the 3.9's
go with a good flowing muffler of your choice
with the stock set up,
or single in dual out muffler
and dont go with large diam. pipe/pipes
and on another note
the motors also respond better with a high flow cat

The Flowmaster only allowed me to get the same MPG at about 10 MPH faster. Because the pipe is pretty big anyway, the muffler guy said keep that stock.
What made a major differance was Gibson Headers. Way better acceleration and better performance around 2,000 RPM, where the engine lives, although you'll move out smartly to red-line.
MPG? about 2 better.

hey, i recently just purchased a 2001 Dodge Dakota extended cab, 2wd, with the 3.9l automatic. It has 73,000KM of old man driving.
I've driven it maybe 200KMs and according to my Over-head console, the highest i've seen is 16.7MPG. Thats driving really easy and mostly highway.
I just went out and purchased a drop in K&N high flow air filter (The $80 one). Installed it tonite i'll see friday whether it makes a big difference or not..
Ive been following this post, and theres different sparkplugs i can put in? Autolites or something? Will this make a difference at all?
Also i was reading about MSD sparkplug wire? I found the ACCEL high performance plug wires in my area, are they the same thing?
As well, noticed the engine runs fairly cold, is there a warmer thermostat i can put in to increase mileage as well??
I dont have alot of big money to spend just trying to squeeze every ounce.
Any tips/tricks are well apprciated.

My 98 3.9 auto, 2wd, reg cab with a lightweight plastic shell, has; over 500,000 miles, averaged high 18's and 19's depending on seasonal gas formulation.
Guess that is pretty much what a Dakota our size and weight will get.
The low resistance wires will help a bit, Platinum plugs will last longer and may help slightly, Synthetic lubrication may improve MPG, and will make it last longer.

I own a 2001 ext. cab 3.9 v6 2wd with about 135,000 Miles on it and It is pretty much as stock as you can get, with the exception of the drop-in k&n filter which ive had the last 8000 miles and mobil 1 10w30 synthetic. On garbage winter gas, I average about 14 mpg (all city), but after an engine flush, fresh fluid, new fram tough-guard oil filter and a cleaning and re-oiling of the k&n, I get about 17-19 mpg (all city). I also use Lucas upper-cylender lubricant, which keeps my engine running noticably smoother compared to running without it. No complaints :) When I first bought the truck at 115,000 Miles, I was getting 13-14 mpg, but I think it was the way I was driving, which was a lot more rough. Now, I rarely go over 2500 rpm, usually not going over 2000. Im not sure of what gears I have, but at 60mph, Im at around 1700-1800 rpm in OD. I wouldnt mind getting even better mpg with minor mods if anyone has any suggestions.
