Subject: what rpm do you shift at? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 5spd 97 dakota sport CC. It has 93k miles on it and still runs great. The question is at what rpm does every one shift at without causing excess wear on the engine? I normally shift right after the shift light comes on which is only like 2k. If I were to shift at 4k on a normal basest will it cause excessive wear on the engine?

Message: i shift at 1500-2000. i like to save gas. shift at 4000 if you want to eat gas. now if u were racind then you would wnat to shift richt before redline limiter kicks in and cuts you off.

Message: When i'm driving around (not racing) i shift about 3 grand. If i shift when the shift light comes on it doesn't feel like it had enough get up and go (i'm an aggressive driver). If anything i think it would be better to shift at 2500-3000 rpm then down around 1500-2000, it's not really good to lug the engine at those low rpm's, puts a lot of stress on the engine.

Message: Typically I shift between 3000-3500, if I'm hurrying I'll run it up to about 4500 maybe. Shifting when the light comes on just seems to lug the engine more... I ignore the light.
Way I see it, if I wanted the computer to have any say in when to shift, I would have gotten an automatic. :0P

Message: 00" with 37k and i shift about the same as Todd described, usually between 3000-3500 and if im in a hurry around 4000-4500. Shifting when the light comes on aroud 2000-2500 seems like it would burn more gas seeing that the engine has to work harder to get back up to an idle speed.

Message: My shifting varies greatly with traffic. If we're accellerating slow, I'll shift as early as 1500, at least out of first and second. If I'm leading the pack, usually 2500-3000. And if I'm plucking a wild hair from up my butt, 4000 is where I see the fastest 0-60. That's due to current mods, however; cat was pushed back to spring, after which I should be shifting at redline again.

Message: rpm will eventually kill an engine. ie the more times you rev it up higher then you need to the more internal wear occurs. If two identicle engines are required to do the identicle amount of work the one runnin the higher rpm will wear out fater.

Message: I've got a auto but I normaly LET it shift into 2nd about 3000-3500 RPM 3rd about 2500-3000 O/D about 2300 RPM if Im in a rush in second I let it shift about 5300 RPM, in other gears usually almost redline it every single gear except O/D. Passing gear is awsome though usuall take that from 3700-5600 RPM. Mines a 99 Dakota Sport 3.9L V6.

Message: Some wild advice out there
Let your hand and foot tell you when to shift not the stupid little light that wants you to lug the engie and be in 5th only pulling 1500 RPM .
shifting around 3-4 grand never hurt any engine unless its a desiel.
Try to learn when to shift Learn where your power and torque bands are and you can actually get alot more Mileage motor and gas.
you will feel the engine become smooth right when it tops a torque or HP curve then shift. It takes practice and but in the end you will keep the engine from learning only to make HP at specific times.
this will also save the engine and allow more fun
AND LASTLY DO NOT LOOK AT THE TACH FEEL THE ENGINE MAKE POWER
AND TURN THAT DAMNED RADIO OFF

Message: I agree with 98 Black, I have an 87 Dak with 140k on her, I still got the premagnum in her for now, but I rutinely shift between 3k-4K, that's just the way that I drive. I'm aggressive, I've only changed the clutch once since I've owned her, and that's going on 5 years. No problems from her yet, I just got a magnum v6 and can't wait to put it in her aftet the rebuild, and performance mods. In short shift where you feel comfortable.
