I built my own intake with a K&N 6x9" cone filter and some 3" ABS pipe. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think K&N's GenII FIPK for the 5.9L will fit the 3.9L if you wanna go for better looking.

I've been wondering about this myself... K&N cold air intake is a little more than I want to spend right now. I've heard about the homemade deal... Also heard it might not hold up in the high heat of an engine compartment. Any truth to that?

If I can build this thing, I'll will only have to buy the K&N, Dad's got all the pipe I need...

Turbo City's Dual intake is what I have and I love it. It really woke the engine up (biggest single improvement until I put the v8 Throttle body on). I installed it when I got my muffler done. Nice thing about it is that it's made of a nice light aluminum casting. When I relocated my IAT I cut threads directly in it.

Sasquatch made one of the funniest out-of-context quotes I've seen in a while with "Dad's got all the pipe I need... "

Take no offense, it just made me laugh. ; )

I've had my Home-brew intake in my truck for about 5,000 miles now and I put in the Hottest day of the summer and I have no problems.

Now thats it the Begining of Winter here in NE
All the extra Cold air into the engine really give it a boost.

I had my "Home Brew" in during the summer, and it was hot as hell around here. ABS pipe and rubber Fernco couplers held up well, I don't think the engine compartment actually gets hot enough to cause any worry. I eventually want to get the K&N FIPK because its much neater than the the HomeBrew and it has the heat sheild. But like Sasquatch says, its a little more than I wanna spend right now.

If you don't want the homebrew rig and want something a little more attractive, I'd recommend the Intense Performance with the 7" Powerstack filter. More than enough intake for a V6, and top quality; has come out on top in a couple of intake shootouts that I've come across. $125 direct from Intense, half the cost of the K&N FIPK.

MY 3.9 'kota responded VERY wellwith just a 19.00 Edelbrock pro-flo air cleaner (the triangle shaped one w/the foam element). I also went with a 160 degree thermostat& a 40 series flomaster. A friend gave me a tailpipe off of his 5.9 r/t and this combo has been a lot of fun.

Hey redccdak00!

I bought a K&N 6x9 filter and made the intake out 3 in. dia. exhaust tubing. Painted it with High-temperature spray paint. Took a trip this summer from Montana to Virgina and back and had no problems. If you are up north where it is cold, you should be okay with the ABS pipe. Down south in warmer climates you may run into trouble with the ABS sagging, melting, or cracking then breaking. The last thing you want is the suck all that broken crap through your engine. I am no expert, but this is the information I found when I began the exact same quest as you.

Yeah that was kinda funny.. lol

i had the flo pro triangle autozone special too. It gave almost the same performance as my mopar cold air intake but no where near the same gas milage. Worth the $19.

oH YEAH,Igot good perf. out of this setup. The tb. seems to like the straight shot of air.I also am using a phenolic tb spacer to keep the tb cool. in addition I am running a 160 therm. to keep underhood temps. down.I don't know if this is why my 3.9 runs so well, but I'll take all I can get!!

thanks for your input, but im still clueless on what i want. Is the k&n fipk worth the money over the home brew, quick d, or intense peformance. Another words will it out peform it enough that i'd b happy buying it over 1 of the others or making my own? I can afford the k&n fipk right now so is that the way i should go? Please let me know.

thanks

LOL, glad you guys got a kick out of that. :)

I'm going to look up so home brew kits now. Can't wait to see what some black ABS sewer pipe can do for my HP, LOL

I'll be sure to check it regularly though, don't wanna be sucking cracked ABS into the engine... Thanks for the info.

IntenseDak39, when you say you got "no where near the same gas milage" did you mean, that the cold air got better mpg?

I put one of those bad boys on my 83 camaro, it had a 350 from a 77 nova, but I would have never thought of putting it on my truck, did you take the whole box off?

i went from about 20 mpg to 17 (city) and lost about the same on the highway...

cold air does make an engine happy!

you can take the whole stock intake off... just get a 1/8th thread rod to mount the flo pro on (just like your 350)

sorry i didnt see the earlier.. to busy posting @ www.a1computech.com/index

I've had people tell me before that it will fit. Theres no reason it shouldn't fit, I'm pretty sure the V6 TB and the OEM V8 TB have all the same dimensions (except the ports of course). The only concern may be if you have an automatic transmission, the cruise may be in the way some. But then I found this thread...
