does anyone know if a v6 from a 2000 dakota will fit in a 96 without having to change the wiring harness or anything major? I was told any v6 from 92 to 01 would work but I want to be sure.

Yup, your safe.
Just make sure to use all sensors and vacum valves from your original, I would even use your original TB.
