Subject: Fuel Pump?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 99 Dakota 3.9L that won't start. I have ruled out spark as I am getting it to the distributor and to the plugs. The battery is fine- it turns over no problem. I can hear the fuel pump spin when I turn on the ignition, but I don't know how to tell if I am getting fuel to the injectors.

How can I troubleshoot further? Can I tell if it is the fuel filter without dropping the tank?

Thanks,

Greg

there is a little test port on the fuel rail... get a nail and push it open (like the valve on a tire) and look for fuel to shoot out... if it does, pump is good.

to test pressure you can rent a fuel pressure tester from autozone or buy one from many autoparts stores.

The filter shouldnt be the problem because you should never have to change it (according to the manufacturer) unless there is a known contaminate in the system.

look at ignition relays and that sort of thing. How did you check to see if spark was getting to the spark plugs?

Thanks, I tested the fuel pressure on the valve on the fuel rail, seems to have plenty of pressure. Now what? I tested the spark at the plugs by removing the wires from the plugs and inserting a screwdriver into the wire and holding it close to a grounded metal part while turning the engine. I got a spark.

You mentioned ignition relays? Where do I find them and how do I test them?

Thanks,

Greg

My '99 V6 did the same thing a couple of weeks ago and turns out the truck flooded itself. Mash the pedal to the floor and crank it till it starts. It should start!! My mechanic didn't charge me for this service.
