Subject: Moved my timing, how do I put it back? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97 3.9 Dakota. I was having the spark knock problem. I am from the old school, if it knocks back the timing off a little bit. Well I did that and it didn't help, so I went to set it back and I find out you can't set it with a timing light. What can I do to set it back to factory specs?
P.S. I did read on here how you guys are fixing the spark knock problem, I am going to do those things after I get this timing thing fixed.

Message: simple answer, you cant use a timing light to set back your distributor. I have a 98 and according to all-data you have to index your distributor. Due to the PCM controlling your timing theres no way to manually advance/retard the timing. I will furhter update on how to index the distibutor.

Message: Ok Guys. Go to your Chrysler Dealer. They will hook up the DRB III and reset your injector timing. Ignition timing is controlled by the PCM only. Injector timing is controlled by the Dist.
You can play all day with the Dist.and it will still spark knock. Have them Flash the PCM also and then you will have 4 degrees of timing to play with. YES the 4 Degrees is adjustable. You won't get any more, just a way to take it out and fine tune. Indexing the dist. is a way to get it CLOSE. I'm sure everyone wants it perfect like me. My 96 was off a numeric +5 which means advancing the dist. My work partner's 97 was off a +7.
I gained 2 mpg. More response. Definately not a V8 TB gain but every little bit helps. Even though the DRB says in sync it has some fudge factor. Once the Dist is set. lock it down and forget it's there...
