Subject: engine stalling after start up IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1997 3.9 Dakota with 80,000 miles. A few day ago I noticed that it wouldn't idle after start up when the engine was warm. I also noticed that it would not go to fast idle and come down to normal idle on start up when the engine is cold, but it does idle!!! I usually have to give it a little gas to get it running when warm on start up. After it runs a little while it acts and idles fine until I start it again when warm. I did a fuel pressure check it seems fine, 45 psi. It shows no codes on the dash code read out. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for any input!!!

Message: Hey man,
Check out your batterie conections.
In my 98 with 78k miles i recently had
some of the same problems and replaced
both batt. connectors with heavy duty
ones and the startup problem and idle problem
is gone.
Might work, might not, it worth looking
at the connectors.
now you know thats..................

Message: No, my fuel pump seems to be quiet, and pressure seems to be good. The battery thing is interesting. I did notice today when I was checking things, the green glow light inside the battery was not really glowing anymore. I guess that is a sign that the battery is about shot. Maybe that is the problem.

Message: clean your throttle body.. mine had the same problem. and still does about every 5 months.. dunno why but its dumb..lol take your tb off and clean where the butterflies are.. there is nothing but air going past there and gunk build up is very common.. very easy thing to do.. once you clean it up get rid of all the gunk that dont allow the proper air flow thro when the butterflies are closed...a certain amount of air is suppose to pass thro to allow your truck to idle.. and if that gunk is there.. no air.. hense the stalling.. rough idling. my 2 cents..

Message: Steve...mine had the same symptoms....what I did was pull the battery cable, turn the ignition on for 20 seconds to reset the computer...it will then idle when warm. Helps to narrow the field of possible failures....Computer related or mechanical...
My computer finally caught the code for the oxygen sensor. Just replaced it, reset the comp & waiting....Runs & idles like new... 93 3.9L 140K

Message: I have a 97 3.9, and it does the same thing. A few cheap things to try before anything else is fuel injector cleaner, dry gas, cleaning your throttle body, i have heard the battery thing alot too. I have also heard that it may be the throttle positioning sensor. good luck
