The 3.9L is fine for any driving. They just don't have much low end power; so no towing. With 3.55 gears you need to be over 2500 rpm before she pulls (about 80mph). You will also notice better milage.
I have two Dakota 4x4's w/ 3.9L and all they've needed is an oil change every 7000 mi.
'88, 220 000 mi., all stock and spent last 10 yrs. as offroad work truck
'97, 180 000 mi., upgraded timing chain to get rid of noise (original was still fine)
