Message: I have a 95 4x2 with automatic and overdrive. Has the 3.90 axle in it. I relocated the sensor and removed the clutch fan. added bosch plugs and wires. With 168,000 it runs great. The driveline has never been apart for anything. Will easily smoke both rear tires when power braked. Gets 25 mpg on a trip. I love this truck!

Message: Yes, the 3.9 with 3.55 gears doesn't have enough power to hold it in OD at hwy speeds more often than not. 70mph, 3-4% grade...forget it. I think the wind resistance starts to become a factor at those speeds too. 3.9 can't even push its own bulk through the air effectivly. Pushing the OD button works but then the engine is screaming at like 3300 rpm and i don't like to keep it there too long cause i don't trust this engine. On interstate over passes in the Rockies, its right lane and 45 mph or less all the way up the grades and sometimes it even shifts down to second gear. This is with no payload, mind you. People blasting past me like i'm standing still.

Message: This question is for all of you guys with the four speed automatics. Do your trucks have to be warmed up for OD to work. My OD will not turn on until it has travelled at least 5 miles. My milage suffers because of it.

Message: NOSDART68,
According to Dodge, thats normal. There were some other people enquiring about that a while back, the computer won't engage overdrive until the transmission reachs operating temp. If it takes just five miles to come on, I -really- don't think it's hurting your milage all that much.

Message: Whats wrong with 3000 RPM? I ran from Michigan to Florida in 4th gear at 75-80MPH with a full bed and a loaded U-haul behind it. That probally was pushing 3000-3500 the entire time. Of course, I got about 8 MPG and changed the oil immediatly on arrival. Blew the muffler apart pretty bad, not sure how, but by the time we got down here I had split the welds on the backside. I didn't have any trouble on hills unless I was in 5th, which technically -is- overdrive...
I don't think I know of a single vehicle that doesn't shift out of overdrive on a hill. I know our old Chevy full-size van (350 V-8) did, but it had a wacky transmission in it anyway. My old Chevy pickup (built 305) would drop into 2nd (350-Turbo 3-speed w/ shift kit) on large hills at highway speed.
You want to talk under-powered? I drove my last car (1996 Chevy Cavalier w/3-speed Auto) to Colorado. Drove it up Pike's Peak, that was slow going so no issues, just left it in L2. But we drove into the mountains coming out of Devner on the highway (through the tunnel!), poor car was doing 35 MPH floored at the top of that one. It never really ran right after that... ended up trading it in on the Dak (at 63,000 miles it burned 1.5 guarts of oil every 3-months, had the ECM replaced twice, valve cover gasket once, both front wheel bearings once, and the driver's side CV joint twice. Who did the song, "Piece of Sh!t Car"? They wrote about that car!) and couldn't be happier! Well... I could, but that would involve it being a 5.2L 5-speed Extended Cab w/ the 3.92 rear-end. If only one had been available when I was buying!

Message: Quickly edging up on 50,000 - speedo reads 49,200 now, I had/have 3yr/50,000 extend platnium coverage, I have had no serious problems but it always seems that when your coverage is up so is the statement "no serious problems".

p.s. It usually takes closer to 10 than 5 miles for OD to engage for me.

Message: Mine won't shift into OD for a few miles when its real cold out, like less than 20 F. Otherwise it shifts into OD pretty much right away.

Message: I have 150k on my 96 SLT extended cab 4X4. (By the way my first Dodge and I love it).
I need some help though. When I start the truck the battery charge indicator only goes a little past minimum charge. The gas gauge shows almost a quarter of a tank more than it has. When I turn on the head lights the dashboard light doesn't come on, the hazard light indicators on both sides stay on and the ignition key buzzer stays on until I turn the dimmer switch on the dashboard all the way off. Also when driving and I use the turn signal the tach and speedometer jump around. It acts like the battery isn't taking a charge but I have no trouble starting my truck or using headlights, radio, and heater. Could it be a bad cell in the battery or faulty wiring in the dashboard? The alternator is sending 14 amps to the battery at idle. Has anyone experienced this problem? Any suggestions?
