Message: I have a 99 Dakota V6. It PINGS !!! With my job it idles a lot. When the engine is cold its OK but when it warms up it PINGS. After idling for a while it REALLY PINGS and sounds like a jet until it gets some air. Any suggections would be greatly appreciated. I'm from the "old school" when you could crank the distributor around a little and take care of the problem. With no distributor and all, what can I do? The temp gauge doesn't show it overheating but heat does seem to be part of the problem.

Message: Replace your 195 degree thermostat with 180 degrees and used autolite 3923 plugs. That should take care of the problem. I would start with those cheap fixes to see if it corrects your problem.

Message: One other thought, if your truck idles a lot, it could be carboned up, which would take up combustion chamber volume and effectively raise your compression ratio. You might look into cleaning the chambers out...I think there's another thread in here somewhere about cleaning carbon out.
