Subject: sounds like a honda IP: Logged
Message: while taking a drive last week my truck got real loud, and almost sounds like a honda with a fart pipe. im guessing that this may be caused by a bad cat but not sure. the sound comes and goes and i cant really tell a diffrence in performance when it is making the noise. Anyone have some suggestions.

Message: From what i've seen the 3rd gen cats can go bad as early as 40,000 miles. I been working in a shop for about 18 months and i've already seen 3 or more 3rd gen daks get new cat. What i would do is have someone sit in your truck and rev it up through out the RPM range (in park!)and listen to your exhaust and try to see where your noise is coming from. If it is your cat, take it to the dealer and see if it's still under waranty, there is and extensive waranty to all cats even if u have a modified exhaust. A bad cat will seriously hurt your HP and MPG. This is just my opinion and i hope it helps you.

Message: I Dont Know Sounds To Me Like The Cat Is Failing Or You Might Have A Leak Somewhere.
FYI Cat Life Is Around 100,000 Miles.
What I would Do Is Looking Under For Any Ovious Holes Or Black Stuff Around The Pipe Whitch Means there is a hole.

Message: Definitly change the cat. On my 97 dak, the cat went bad at 56K. Pretty crapy for a cat! But the good news is The Government has a extended waranty on the cat so it shouldn't cost you anything. Good luck :)

Message: Just over 100k and I'm on the 3rd cat. They do tend to get loud when the guts come loose, but I noticed a slight power increase when all of mine went bad. If you let it go for a while, it will start rattling, but don't recommened it.

Message: thanks for the help. i heard that about the cats going bad quickly. i think that i may try a high flow cat, instead of dodge cat even though it is still under warranty. i cant see the logic in throwing the exact same thing in that will more than likely go bad again in another 32000 miles.
has anyone tried just removing the cat and installing a kat box. i know it is illegal but in texas we still don't check, at least for another year. i just see $70 for kat box or approx. $200 for new cat.
again thanks for the help.

Message: 200 bucks for a cat! noway! :) Get a high flow cat from the guys at speedtweaks! I think they are about 90 bucks and that even might include shiping. Definitly look there first. If a "katbox" is 70 and illegal, then i think 90 and legal would be the way to go, even in texas ;) Now that i got my new cat back, my next step is getting a high flow cat. I had one on my 87 dak and i loved it. It made a differance when i bolted that on along with a cat back exhaust.
Just my thoughts, do with them as you want. :)

Message: i thought i heard somewhere close to 200 was the running price but your right speedtweaks has them for 90. Thanks for the help.
What makes the cat fail anyway. i just got the truck about 6000 miles ago so i don't really know how it was treated before.

Message: I'm sorry, but I really dont know what causes the cat to go bad. When i got my 97 a older guy had it and he worked at a stone quarry type place, so i'd imagin it was pretty hard on the cat and exhaust, because at about 60K the "guts" of the cat came loose and it made god for awful noises. So i just got the new one because it didnt cost me a thing because of the government recal or whatever it was. I now have 130K on the truck and the cat is still working fine. But i think since i have the new cat back, i may as well just get a high flow cat from speedtweaks anyway. I dont think 90 bucks is that bad for a performance part, and the guys at speedtweaks dont usually sell anything thats gonna make us dak owners disapoinded. So good luck with your cat. If and when i get my high flow from speedtweaks i'll let you know how i like it, it should be before X-mas. :) or atleast it better be. lol Or if you get one before that, please let me know how you like it, like i've said, i had one on my 87 and i really liked it, so we'll see :)

Message: I had my Cat replaced at 76,000 on my 97 and then it started to go bad at 95,000 again. So I shopped around and picked up a Carsound High Flow cat and i love that thing! I could tell right away when i got it that it was a better quality in welding and was a very tight unit. I put that thing on my 97 which already had a single in, dual out Deltaflow 40 series and it sounds alot throatier than before. Made the tone lower. Any way, shop around, I got mine shipped to me brand-new for 36 bucks!!

Message: Well, I guess I got lucky... I found a guy, either on this board or on moparchat.com who needed the money and wanted to get rid of it. You just have to be patient and look around. I wish they sold those cats cheap like that at a retail store.
Oh, and how I started?
Well, I got my muffler from racerpartswholesale online for 65 bucks. Then I got two 3.5 inch tips. Then I took it to a shop I knew of and haggled with him in Spanish to sell me two pipes and weld on the muffler and the tips. I got him down to 80. Oh, the secret to doing stuff like that is pay in cash, and only take just enough money that you want to spend. I was willing to pay 80 and I took 80 bucks cash and told him thats all i got and when i started to walk away, he accepted my offer. Then I got the cat sometime a few months later and had that put on for 30 bucks at a local shop.
Cost:
Muffler: $65
Tips: $24
Welding the muffler: $80
Carsound Cat: $36
Welding Cat: $30
All total for exhaust: $235
It sounds pretty damn good, if I do say so myself.
You can ask dakotaaggie06 what he thinks about the sound... he heard it a few weekends ago.

Message: It probably is the cat - these things constantly fail on both Dakota and Ram. Sure, they'll put on a new cat, and it will fail again in about the same time frame. Whatever you do, don't drive for long with the broken cat (they collapse from within)else you risk getting parts of the core in your muffler, and now you have a permanent rattle!
I went through two factory cats before wising up and spending $100 on an open flow cat. Good move when combined with my Gibson (single) cat back muffler system!
Good luck!
