Message: I was wondering if anyone could let me know how to change out my belt tensioner on my 96 Dakota.
The dealer told me it needs to be changed and if they did the job it would expensive.

Message: Check out the posting on Chain vs tensioner dated Oct 23. I just installed a new timing chain and a guy named Chris posted excellent instuctions on how to "do it yourself" Don't buy a tensioner or a factory chain. They're junk and cost too much. From Summit Performance I got a double roller type chain for $50. Much better then original and won't get all stretched out. The dealer want $125 for the OEM crap. You can replace your timing chain, water pump, and all the hoses for less than the dealer will charge just for the parts.

Message: If its the surpentine belt tensioner, thats easy. Use a 15mm socket on a ratchet to take the tension off of the belt (pull toward the fan to remove the belt), take off the coil with a phillips head screwdriver. Then use a 15mm wrench to loosen the tensioner, and you are ready to install the new. Reverse your steps to complete.
