Subject: Best Flowing Muffler IP: Logged
Message: I'm looking to put an aftermarket hi-flow muffler on my '01 V6 and i wanted to know which ones are made for power and which ones are made for sound.
I have a 3.9 so i know that pretty much any aftermarket muffler will sound kinda crapy(want's to be a V8) but i need some more performance.
Thanks,
Gooberlog

Message: dj,

Message: Not sure on the Gibson but the Super Turbo and all Flowmasters are chambered mufflers, which pretty much suck for flow. You want a straight through muffler. Dynomax Race Magnum Bullet, UltraFlo, or Thrush Magnum are all straight through glasspacked mufflers(fiberglass/steelwool in most of them anymore). Borla makes a few straight through mufflers and Super Trapps are straight through.

Message: Good day, Gooberlog:
I have a Magnaflow on my V6. It sounds like a V8 at idle, it is a straight-thru muffler, and helped my truck with more power.Go to the Magnaflow website, check the testimonials there. I personally think it is one of the BEST mufflers available.
Best Regards, Alex

Message: I drive a 3.9L V6 5SPD with an open flow catalytic and a single outlet Gibson cat back. Looks sharp, noticable power increase combined with the K&N filter, and once it broke in, great V8 rumble at idle. It sounds great going through the gears, and the only time I hear a questionable sound is when the engine is at peak RPM in fourth and fifth gear. Flowmaster is nice, but too loud for me.

Message: I have the Magnaflow on my V6 too. My local muffler shop had a Flowmaster 50 and the Magnaflow in stock for my truck and he was nice enough to remove the stock muffler and clamp each in place to let me listen to them to decide. Price was the same for both and the difference in sound was nil. The main reason I went with the Magnaflow after that was lifetime warranty. I'll not have to pay for another new muffler, just the labor to install it, about $10 according to my muffler shop.

Message: It seems the general consensus is for the Magnaflow muffler. What series? XL Turbo? Stainless Steel? Polished? I have a '99 with the V6 and recently installed the Magnaflow high flow converter with dual exhaust, but a cheap dual muffler that sounds like crap! Any thoughts?

Message: I had a gibson on my truck. IT SUCKED!!! Way too loud. It resonated terrible at about 1800-2200 RPM (highway RPM). I put a flowmaster 80 which is a direct replacement for the stock muffler. Sounds much better inside and outside. Better low end torque too. I noticed a loss on the low end with the gibson.

Message: Yeah, not looking for anything real loud. I like the deep tone this one has at an idle, but beyond that it kinda sucks and is loud; lots of sound resonance in the cab. I have stock manifolds (hopefully will have headers soon). Hopefully will have it lifted soon too! Iv'e had Flowmasters in the past; on my old Chevy with a small block. I think they were 40 series, they sounded great. But I've heard that they're a little bit higher pitched with a V6? I just hate the sound of little Japanese (rice burner) cars that the little gang bangers drive. Don't want my truck to sound like a damn blender! Want something with a deep tone, but not overbearing. Any ideas?

Message: The best thing I've found was also the most affordable. The DynoMax Super-Turbo Part# 17748 ($55). Bolt it right in place of your stock muffler, useing the stock tailpipe. Gibson on the v6 sucks, kills low end tq,& your wallet. My flowmaster 40 fell apart in 2 years and sounded a little "ricey" at certain rpms. I was going to try a flowmaster 50 2 1/2 in duel 2's out, but money ran short, and I'm glad it did. I'm extremely happy with the dynomax super-turbo.

Message: I've heard the Magnaflows on the V6 Daks and personally think they sound like crap...I used to have a 40 series, single in/single out with a turn down off the muffler. Sounded GREAT at idle...and horrible at higher RPMs. Aside from the fact that it sounded like a V6 at high RPMs, the drone on the highway was super annoying. I replaced that recently with a Dynomax Super Turbo 17748. It has a very nice rumble at idle...and is fairly quiet (especially in the cab) at higher RPMs. When you first put it on, you'll think it sounds about like your stock muffler with a light rumble at idle. After having the Flowmaster 40, I had to check my tach after I first started it because I was sure my truck had started and died on me...lol. Give it a few hundred miles to burn in and it'll sound much better. If I get a chance one day, maybe I'll post some videos of it to give you an idea.
I was gonna post the videos of my 40 series, but I apparently never uploaded them to my youtube account...maybe later.
