Message: 2001 Dakota, 46,000 miles, regular oil changes. The check gauges light came on multiple times (oil gauge needle would hit bottom end - 0 - and stay there for a second or two then bounce back up). The dealer found nothing wrong the first time and told me to drive it, said I had oil pressure even though the gauge would read 0 intermittently. The next day, the dealer replaced the sender since it was still acting up. It lasted for two days, repeated the failure mode. The dealer had it a week before he could get the gauge to bounce around. In the process, blew the motor. He says sludge build up from not changing oil. We have oil change records but they're not buying it. What could cause the sludge build up with regular changes?

Message: Sludge will form if the oil gets contaminated with water/antifreeze. Were you loosing antifreeze? If so maybe it was mixing with the oil. What brand/spec oil were you using? Maybe you should send a sample of the oil for analysis. This should give a clue as to what went wrong. I would escalate this, Hmmm... the dealer blew the engine? What specifically blew? Head gasket? If the dealer broke it then they should fix it

Message: Of course now that I just read the original post (like I should have to begin with) I realize that too little oil could do it...

Message: Well, I've gotten nowhere with Chrysler or the dealer. I now have a rebuilt engine that a small town repair shop dropped in. I've now found that I'm not the only one and the dealer told me flat out that the Dakotas have problems with the filler intake tubes cracking and the dirty air that comes in contaminating the oil. This will be the last Dodge I ever buy (it was my fifth one).
If anyone has a number for CHrysler (other than the Customer Service numebr) I would love the help.

Message: Keri, you might want to check this thread out also. It's just a theory of mine but the foam issue is definitely a documented problem with the oil filler tube in the 4.7L motor.

Message: Independent oil testing company found trace amounts of coolant. The sludge was the oil / coolant mix as well as shavings from my pistons, valves, etc. Wherever the leak was, it was small enough that the amounts that leaked were never missed by me or the dealer. I have no idea if it was a head gasket, hairline crack in the block... The engine is gone without the dealer ever taking the time to investigate.

Message: Never had to add coolant, the engine never ran hot, in fact the temp never changed from normal. When the dealer towed it the first time, they checked fluid levels and said the only thing I was low on was window washer fluid. That's when they said everything was fine and sent me home without doing anything but a quick diagnostic and pressure check.
The oil experts where I work tell me that it only takes a couple of tablespoons of coolant in the oil to wipe out an engine.

Only 44K. Really sucks! Out an engine and a runaround.
