Good day, gentlemen, and ladies, of course:

I drive a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500, 4x2, V6 automatic.
I decided to adopt some of the mods suggested on this great website. I hope you don't mind me posting this, considering I don't drive a Dakota. Here are the mods, so far:

1) 14 inch open element K&N filter.
2) Installed Jet Stage II chip.
3) Installed underdrive pulleys.
4) Removed the catalytic converter.
5) Installed 160 degree thermostat.
6) Installed 2.5 inch, in and out, stainless steel Magnaflow muffler.
7) Installed Moroso Hy-Fire box, MSD coil, MSD 8.5 inch wires, new cap and rotor.
8) Installed new 3923 plugs.
9) Ordered B&W cap and rotor from the Canadian Speedtweaks site.
10) Installing 4.11 gears this Thursday, has 3.55s now.
11) Recalibrating the speedometer at the local dealer on Friday.

The mods that I have done so far really WOKE this truck up. I believe that the gear ratio change will be the best mod so far. I am considering headers, however, they are hard to get here in Canada. And, at some point, if all goes well, I would like to install the Vortech supercharger. It is cost-prohibitive, 4700 Canadian dollars.

So, I thought I would let you know what a former Canadian drag racer has done to his Dodge truck, even though it isn't a Dakota.

So, keep having fun, gentlemen, I sure am!

Best Regards, Alex

Hey Alex,

Which part of Canada are you from? If the 3.9L in the Ram is the same as the Dakota, I believe there's a guy selling almost new JBA headers in Michigan. Check the Classifield Section on this site.

Isn't the 160 tstat too cold for the 3.9L? What gap do you have the 3923's at? You should also consider building your own IAT adjuster.

Good evening, Swingman:

Thx for replying! I live just outside Edmonton, Alberta. By the way, the Canadian Speedtweaks site is here in Edmonton! And I just got my BW cap and rotor from them today. Yes, the V6 I have is the same 3.9 V6 found in Dakotas. I appreciate your help on the headers in Michigan, however I will probably wait till the spring and see if there will be other header manufacturers, other than JBA, that will start producing headers for the V6 in my truck. I find the JBA too expensive and to ship those headers from Michigan would cost me a bundle.I had a quote on some Flowtech headers for my truck, unfortunately they only make the V8 headers. The cost was only $220.00 Canadian. As for the IAT adjuster, I will tackle that in the spring when the weather warms up. My truck runs great with the 160 thermostat, no hesitation, no stumbles, at all. I will probably put a 180 thermostat in, for the winter. I gapped the plugs at 45, rather than 40. I could go up to 50, according to what I have read here on this site.

Take care, man!

Best Regards, Alex

Latest Ram V6 Mods!

Good day, everyone:

I got my 4.10 gears installed this past Thursday. Had the speedometer gear changed on Friday. The 4.10 gears is the BEST mod to date! Now this V-6 Automatic Ram really gets off the line! I am purchasing a V-tech this week and see what kind of times I can run in the quarter mile. The truck feels like a 16 second machine now, I will verify that later this week. By the way, the V-tech is only costing me $210.00 Canadian, which is about 131 US dollars. Oh, I street-raced a F-150 1/2 ton the other day, it either had the 4.2 litre V-6 or the 4.6 litre V-8, had a 5-speed. I raced him up to about 55 mph, he got me out of the hole, I had over a truck-length on him at 55. Was he pissed! HeHe!!! I had my son and his friend with me too, he was by himself! And this was before I put in the 4.10s! I will probably meet him again, then I will wax his ass, bigtime!

So take care, everyone. I will post my V-tech times within a week or so. That is if the snow doesn't start to fly around here! LOL!

Best Regards, Alex

Good day, maaRTE:

I had someone else do the gears install. I do my own tuneups and stuff, the rest I leave to the pros. I can make more money(I am self-employed) while I have someone else work on my truck so I am still ahead. LOL. The gears are working great, man. When I have the truck in drive, it shifts from 1st to 2nd at about 32 mph, and from 2nd to 3rd at about 63 mph instaed of 75 mph. This tells me that the 4.10 gears are well suited for the quarter mile. I did a full acceleration from 0 to 75 mph tonight, and man, what a difference from the 3.55s! I played with a mid 90s mustang the other day, and I stayed right with him. I am damn sure this ia 16.5 second truck now. Now I am thinking of doing the Crower 1.7 rockers before the end of October. I had a low 16 second 77 350 automatic Monte Carlo back in 1978 that did not feel as fast as this truck!

As for a mechanic to help you, maaRTe, I don't live in the Bay area. I live up here in Alberta, Canada. I got a good deal on my gears and installation, it worked out to $719.00 Canadian which is about 450 US dollars. This included everything, the gears, the installation kit, axle seals, shop supplies, gear oil, and labor. I checked other shops and they were charging way more money, at least 300 Canadian dollars more! Just check around maaRTe, I am sure you will find a good shop and a decent price. Now, I have the Motive gears, I am not sure if you can get those where you live. I understand the Richmond gears, other after-market gears, and especially Chrysler gears are more expensive than the Motive gears. I believe the Motives are Canadian made. From what I have read elsewhere on this site, you should not be paying more than $500.00 US to get the new gears installed. You have a RT, right? If so, you have the 9.25 inch differential, the same as I have. The swap is fairly simple, takes about 4 to 5 hours, so I understand. Check the transmission and differential places in your area, do the research. It pays off! It sure did for me. And get the 4.10s, your RT will handle them, no problem.

Take care, man! By the way, what kind of times you run in your RT? Just curious, is all.

Best Regards, Alex

Good day, Swingman:

Thx for the reply! Are you happy with your V6 ( I am assuming you have one)? Anyway, I bought the G-Tech (not V-tech, I was confused, have a Vtech phone, LOL) 2 days ago. When the weather gets nicer here, been windy, cold, rainy, snowy, I will try it out. I may go to the local track here on Sunday, if the weather is decent enough.

Take care, man!

Best Regards, Alex
