Subject: Help Dropping Tranny on 94 Dakota IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1994 2wd v6 Dakota Manual w/ 185k on it and the clutch was making a kind of squeeling in both with the clutch engaged and disengaged. At any rate it finally went and is tuck in the engaged state. I am sure it is the release bearing for I can see balls and other parts in the clutch shroud. I have removed all wires, cross-members, and shifter. THe next step in the Haynes manual says "remove transmission" which made sense to me when I found a diagram showing a transmission with a bell-housing bolted to it. On my truck, the tranny and bell-housing are one piece (appears to be bolted from bell-housing side, can see back of threads). I assume I need to remove the slave cylinder then unbolt the bellhousing from the engine. Is this the correct way of removing the tranny. I have the engine supported w/ a bottle jack and piece of wood. How much will I have to tilt the engine to remove the tranny, looks like there is quite of bit of clearance above and behind tranny except bell-housign appears a little tight. Wish I could find a better manual, thanks for your comments.

Message: yup, the bellhousing and tranny come down as one piece. First ya need to drp the y-pipe from the motor and exhaust pipe. Nows a goode time to change trans oil anyways so drain the trans so it doesnt spill out the tail shaft when ya remove the driveshaft. Mark the driveshaft and rear axel with some paint so you know which way it goes back in later. Then remove the driveshaft Take off the starter, dustshield, oilfilter and slave cylinder, then undo all the bolts from the bellhousing holding it to the block. Now secure your wheels so the truck doesnt roll and undo the parking brake cabel from the passengers side frame and move it out of the way. Now put a floor jack under the tranny. Undo the two nust from the rear motor mount and the 4 nuts/bolts holding the crossmember from the frame. Now jack the tranny up till it clears the cross member and remove the cross member. I usually dont have anything under the motor at this point, so that it will tilt back and you can slid the tranny right out of it. Another tip is to leave the trans IN Gear when you drop it. That way you can get the input shaft to line up later when you are putting it back in by turrning the driveshaft.

Thanks so much for the help, that makes alot mor sense. You say I must remove the 2 nuts from the rear motor mount, I assume you meant transmission mount, is that right. Also, do you have any idea how much the tranny weighs, will I be able to handle and align it by myslef with the help of a floor jack. Thanks again.

Message: its pretty heavy... when i put it back it I slid a jack under the tailshaft and i got under the bellhousing.. I benchpressed the bellhousing up while a buddy jacked up the rear of the trans so it sat at the right angle. You shouyld be able to get it in yourself
oh yea rear motor mount = trans mount
