Subject: Carbon Build-up on exhaust after IAT rel
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2002 3.9L V6 and I have followed alot of you guys advice by making a homebrew intake and I have relocated the IAT to inside the intake pipe behind the filter. I have seen noticable gains since. I have also seen about 1.5 to 2 mpg decrease in mileage. Now I am having alot of carbon(black) build up on my exhaust tip. Is this normal? what does it mean? Am I running to RICH now and that is what is causing my worst gas mileage too? Please respond and let me know if something may be wrong?

It does make the pcm think that you are running colder then you actually are, so yes if it is reading very cold, you will get worse mpg, and more carbon build up. Do you live in a cold climate, etc?? If so, you might want to put it back in engine, or closer to the engine, so that it will read a tad warmer then it is now. Also, did you solder the wires, or butt splice?? You might have a bad connection and theirfor getting a wrong reading.
